Fw-190D13

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys,

This is one of the Focke Factory series I built last year, all from Hasegawa's 1/32 Fw-190D9 kit.  It's a good, straight forward kit to build, simple assembly, a few alternate parts, like canopy styles, plus there are lots and lots of after market do-dads you can waste your money on.  Which is, of course, precisely what I did!

This is Franz Goetz's D13, using the Hasegawa kit as a base but incorporating a new resin fuselage by Grey Matters, mastered by Gerry Rutman. Extras include a Henri Daehne propeller, Yahu IP, Quick Boost exhaust stacks and control column, HGW seatbelts and E-Z Line aerial cable.  Then I've done things like thin down the seat, add brake lines from plastic rod and lead wire, plus a few bits on the engine to make it look a bit more busy.  A last minute addition was making the push rod actuators for the cooling flaps.  Well worth doing. It's work noting the D11,12 and 13 versions had a larger engine and mountings and the cooling flap immediately in front of the starboard exhaust stack opens, on the D9 it stays shut as per the kit.  It's a minor modification but worth doing to get it right.

Decals are Eagle Cals.  These were a pain in the posterior to apply, thick and stiff and I ended up using two sets as the decals cracked or folded or just wouldn't lay down, or all three!  Having said that, they are on and I think they look pretty nice.

References were the Classic series, the Eagle Pubs, Japo.  They all contradict each other on colours and shades but if you are familiar with Luftwaffe, especially late war period, you'll know its a real minefield. So I took a guess and went with the Eagle colours as Gerry Crandall actually saw the airframe in the original colours way back when.  and the book is a great read!

Interior and engine and undercarriage were painted using Gunze, Tamiya and Vallejo paints but all exterior work was by MMP.  I had to wait for weeks for the paint to get from Salt Lake City to the UK importer and it was worth the wait. Sprays beautifully!  I ended up painting two of the four models with Gunze as I couldn't wait any longer for the MMP to arrive.

The gun barrel looks black to the naked eye but the flash cuts thru the chemical blackener!

There's a gun in there somewhere!

Probably the most productive time I had modelling ever, perhaps pipped for first when I made the 1/35 master for the Cromwell Models  E-25 tank in under a week!

Hope you like it.

Regards,
