F-4Phanwell Posted May 12, 2018 Posted May 12, 2018 (edited) Hello Reimund Nice to see finally, that a modeler make a full build review of a Dayglow FIAT G-91 in 1/32. This aircraft is well known from personally experiences in the 70th and 80th in my hometown Oldenburg, when i stand at air base from JaboG 43 and watch take offs and landings. I wish you a nice build up. Edited May 14, 2018 by F-4Phanwell Isar 30/07 1
Isar 30/07 Posted May 12, 2018 Author Posted May 12, 2018 OK, let the build begin! First, how should the model look like when finished. Doing a lot of Research, the Gina`s (named by pilots and cews as well) ready for the next flight are seen with hatches in the fuselage open. These hatches give acess to hydraulic systems on left side of fuselage and another one giving access to insert the engine start cartridges. Both hatches are located between the wings and the elevators. Next common sight is the opened cover for the brake chute above the exhaust. If this cover is opened, a auxiliary chute is hanging out indicating to pilot and crew that the brake chute is inserted. Last but not least the crew access ladder needs to be done as well. Starting with the exhaust - here: some pics of the real one... http:// http:// http:// http:// http:// http:// http:// http:// sandokan, Kagemusha, Gazzas and 2 others 5
Isar 30/07 Posted May 12, 2018 Author Posted May 12, 2018 Before posting some pics of the build, please let me point out 2 Things: First, this model could not be updated/scratched without all those posted pics of the real Thing. I must be a very lucky man, calling Alex a friend of mine! Working as a flight engineer and crazy as I am about modelling, he is providing me with knowledge, pics and manuals. The already posted photos were taken at the Museum der Bundesluftwaffe at the Gatow airfield in Berlin - a very warm thank you, Alex! Next - as my english is far from being perfect, I don´t know a lot of specific aviation terms. But I hope (and I´m sure) you understand - and let the photos speak a lot more.... http:// The exhaust is a tube without any details and a backplate with a fan. http:// Testfitting http:// The arrows pointing at the side walls that needs some thinning. Isar 30/07 Posted May 12, 2018 Author Posted May 12, 2018 This looks closer to the real one ">http:// putting a tape around the tube to get the outline and get correct quarters ">http:// drilling holes into the tube ">http:// cutting and inserting some sheet ">http:// ">http:// next, some lead foil needs to be placed inside the tube ">http:// ">http://https://postimg.cc/image/7j0gmghvx/'> Kagemusha, LSP_Kevin, sandokan and 1 other 4
Isar 30/07 Posted May 12, 2018 Author Posted May 12, 2018 wiring time - putting somes wires of different sizes into the tube to get a more detailed look http:// http:// http:// The center of the fan needs some attention as it looks far to undersized. Spending a few minutes in my spare parts box, I found a propeller from a 72nd model, that would replace the hub. http:// http:// Not ready yet but a better base for further detailing.... Hopefully it will look like the picture I have in mind. Cheers Reimund sandokan, F-4Phanwell and Kagemusha 3
Kagemusha Posted May 12, 2018 Posted May 12, 2018 Terrific work Reimund, for the ladder - because I'm lazy - I plan converting one from the Tamiya F-4. sandokan and Isar 30/07 2
Isar 30/07 Posted May 12, 2018 Author Posted May 12, 2018 Terrific work Reimund, for the ladder - because I'm lazy - I plan converting one from the Tamiya F-4. WOW - interesting idea! So far I was thinking of scratching this, using brass and glueing/soldering the parts. But your idea is much easier to complete. sandokan 1
Marcel111 Posted May 12, 2018 Posted May 12, 2018 Really interesting subject, I always thought the G91 was a nice looking jet. Will be following! sandokan and Isar 30/07 2
Coneheadff Posted May 12, 2018 Posted May 12, 2018 Servus Reimund! Great progress so far!!!! Thanks for the very kind words my friend!!! May I introduce myself...I'm Alex who had the chance to take all the reference photos at the GAF museum in Gatow I might be as crazy about modelling as Reimund, but he's the guy who's actually building and finishing models Alex Isar 30/07 1
Isar 30/07 Posted May 13, 2018 Author Posted May 13, 2018 Some excellent scratchin! Marcel, Alex, Gaz, thanks for following, motivating and supporting!
Isar 30/07 Posted May 13, 2018 Author Posted May 13, 2018 Today a Little progress. I tried to do the `fins` around the hub. Using some styrene strip, cutting and some sanding... Again: that´s what it looks like http:// and the way to this http:// http:// Close examination of the photo shows some metal sheet at the end of the tube next to the fan. Glued a strip of lead foil into the tube and this looks good to me in the end. http:// Tube and backplate hold together. Wonder how much of this detailing will be seen when the model is finished. Needed flashlight to see that there are some imporvements at the end of the tube.... http:// http:// Looking at the photos now, there is some cleaning needed - on the fan and the `fin` Cheers Reimund F-4Phanwell, blackbetty, dutik and 6 others 9
Isar 30/07 Posted May 14, 2018 Author Posted May 14, 2018 Next step: I had to open all the vents and two hatches. Before: http:// http:// http:// Later that day: http:// http:// http:// http:// http:// Not a Major challenge - just time consuming Iain, F-4Phanwell, sandokan and 4 others 7
Isar 30/07 Posted May 14, 2018 Author Posted May 14, 2018 Fuselage halves are solid, about 1 - 1,5 mm thick, so there is no warping. On the other hand my Dremel had a lot to do. http:// http:// http:// Both intakes near the nosegear need some attention, too: http:// http:// Derek B, F-4Phanwell, blackbetty and 3 others 6
