Fiat G.91 R3 - Dayglo Models

Hello Reimund

 

Nice to see finally, that a modeler make a full build review of a Dayglow FIAT G-91 in 1/32. This aircraft is well known from personally experiences in the 70th and 80th in my hometown Oldenburg, when i stand at air base from JaboG 43 and watch take offs and landings.

OK, let the build begin!

 

First, how should the model look like when finished. Doing a lot of Research, the Gina`s (named by pilots and cews as well) ready for the next flight are seen with hatches in the fuselage open. These hatches give acess to hydraulic systems on left side of fuselage and another one giving access to insert the engine start cartridges. Both hatches are located between the wings and the elevators.

Next common sight is the opened cover for the brake chute above the exhaust. If this cover is opened, a auxiliary chute is hanging out indicating to pilot and crew that the brake chute is inserted. 

Last but not least the crew access ladder needs to be done as well.

Before posting some pics of the build, please let me point out 2 Things:

 

First, this model could not be updated/scratched without all those posted pics of the real Thing.

I must be a very lucky man, calling Alex a friend of mine!

Working as a flight engineer and crazy as I am about modelling, he is providing me with knowledge, pics and manuals.

The already posted photos were taken at the Museum der Bundesluftwaffe at the Gatow airfield in Berlin - a very warm thank you, Alex!

 

Next - as my english is far from being perfect, I don´t know a lot of specific aviation terms. But I hope (and I´m sure) you understand - and let the photos speak a lot more....

The exhaust is a tube without any details and a backplate with a fan.

wiring time - putting somes wires of different sizes into the tube to get a more detailed look

The center of the fan needs some attention as it looks far to undersized.

Spending a few minutes in my spare parts box, I found a propeller from a 72nd model, that would replace the hub.

Not ready yet but a better base for further detailing....

Today a Little progress.

I tried to do the `fins` around the hub.

Using some styrene strip, cutting and some sanding...

Again: that´s what it looks like

Close examination of the photo shows some metal sheet at the end of the tube next to the fan. Glued a strip of lead foil into the tube and this looks good to me in the end.

Tube and backplate hold together. Wonder how much of this detailing will be seen when the model is finished.

Needed flashlight to see that there are some imporvements at the end of the tube....

Looking at the photos now, there is some cleaning needed - on the fan and the `fin`

Not a Major challenge - just time consuming

Fuselage halves are solid, about 1 - 1,5 mm thick, so there is no warping. 

On the other hand my Dremel had a lot to do.
