With family commitments today, only a little got done this evening.

I started with the tail.

Then moved onto the underside tiles. I'm trying to decide what to do with the forward leading edge of the wings as there are no decals to cover these areas. If I had known I would have gone with a greyer black.  They do supply extra tile decals, but not specifically for that area.

During the week I printed out some extra decals to replace some of the kit ones that were either out of register or so lacking in detail that they would have detracted from the model.  The bottom two sets I made up.  The top sets are photos of decals rep-scaled from larger and smaller kits. Not the best either and different in sizes compared to the Tamiya markings and each other.

A closer look at my set.

Using the larger US flag as a measurement reference, I re-scaled the two sheets on the right to the same size as the Tamiya sheet on the left.  As you can see the sizes vary on many of the details.  The bottom of the doors are the same width on the two on the right too and match the door width on the kit, not that I will be using them.

More tomorrow.

UPDATE:

This is two hours after applying the decal setting solution.  Wrinkles are all but gone.

The wrinkles didn’t appear until the setting solution and were 99% gone after 2 hours. I’d seen it before on smaller decals where they had come and go, but with such large pieces on this, it was much more pronounced. I will admit when they first appeared, I did panic a little and it took all my resolve not to touch it.

She's almost done. I'll seal the decals tomorrow with a few coats of Tamiya X22, then a matt coat, take some beauty shots and call her finished.
It's been a fun, and at times frustrating build, but looks great in the cabinet.

She looks quite at home in the cabinet.  Now to find an STS-1 Mission patch.

Columbia looks really cool! Those tile decals really make the finish. The Lunar Module looks really good too. My dad was with NASA at Houston from 64-69 and worked the LM engines. He took us to the Cape and I got to watch Apollo 9 go. That was something for a 12 year old to see and feel! He worked the LM's for Apollo 9, 10 and 11...I have his Apollo 11 Launch Team patch. I joined the Air Force later and carried several satellites in the C-5A to the Cape to launch in the Shuttle. Never got to see a Shuttle launch though. Two great models...brings back good memories. Thanks for following.  Now its time for a break away from the bench for a month. Time that will be spent deciding on and researching my next build.

Thanks, Simon.  I sprayed it with Tamiya smoke from a rattle can. It looks black as inside the cockpit it's dark. Over that went the kit decal which is black.
