HK B-17G WIP Update 9/27/18 Guns and Small Bits

This is an insane build. Total perfectionism.

One of my "most wanted" kits. Pity they are discontinued and you only get them on flea-bay at a crazy crazy price.

HK has re-released the kit so it is available at more sane prices. I know Lucky Model had a couple in stock the other day. Don't know what shipping would cost to where you are but at least you're not paying crazy rpices for the kit itself.

Sorry for the hijack, it's been great following your build as I have the E/F in the stash and you're giving me an idea of what I'm in for.

I was hunting yesterday, was "out of stock" everywhere. The G was listed at $229 and the E/F at $299 ex shipping.

Hello everyone! I haven't been dormant, I promise, it just there hasn't been much to show.

I am still deciding which paint I want to use on her for the natural metal finish, but I am leaning towards AK Metals for their durability. I am fast approaching the paint stage, having finished the seam work on the fuselage. I have begun attaching the clear parts, and then will restore the rivets and panel lines that were lost during the sanding process. Wings have filler applied in a few small spaces, and once seam work is done on those, it's just some last fiddly bits, then paint! The light at the end of the tunnel is almost in sight :-)

Hi, I am also building this kit.

I echo Paul and reckon Alclad is the way to go. Try experimenting first on an old model or a credit card ( expired) to get the finish you are looking for before you commit to your expensive model.

You can also get gloss grey and white undercoats from Alclad before you spray the nmf on top.

This will affect the tone of the various panels.

It's all in the preparation.

Take your time and give the undercoat plenty of time to cure and harden to minimise any issues with the top coat.

Good luck with the build.

You might also be interested that the G-model had both the turret you have used from the E/F model and the other style included with the kit. Note when the O2 bottles are fitted the turret won't rotate inside the turret well without fouling the O2 bottles.

Not really a problem unless you are intending to show the turret guns pointing off to one side.

The guns in the nose turrets are almost always seen pointing 90° to direction of flight when on the ground or before takeoff- it was standard operating procedure to prevent any accidents!

Time for a small update on this 96th BG bird.

As I continue the tedious work of getting the fuselage and wings ready for paint (sand, polish, panel lines, repeat), I wanted to jump into getting the engines and props built to keep things fresh.

I knew from the get-go that as this kit was intended to be placed into a diorama setting inside a glass-top coffee table. I have accumulated several figures (Reedoak, Wings Cockpit Figures), a Jeep, and several other small items to bring it back to Snetterton Heath in early 1945. As part of that process, I wanted to expose one of the engines utilizing one of the Eduard Brassin sets. As you can see here, they are a big step up from the kit engines!

They really are little kits in and of themselves. I've been studying photographs, trying to get the little details as best I can. Even though the Eduard engine differs in appearance so much from the kit engines, I'm hoping that the basic kit engines, dressed up with their own respective Eduard photo-etch sets, will pass muster while hiding inside their cowlings. I don't anticipate investing in Eduard engines for each station, but I also won't rule it out for the future (easy enough to change out later). I imagine this Eduard Brassin engine will draw enough attention to itself to not need the other three engines to look absolutely identical. Here's to hoping!

The proof is in the small details. I noticed in many photos that the lower portion of the cylinder heads colors differently than the "head" of the cylinder. A small amount of Tamiya weathering pastel helps accomplish this.

That's about all for now. Next update, the engines should be completed, and hopefully, painting will have begun on the fuselage and wings. Stay tuned! As always, comments and critiques are most welcome.
