A-6E seats

Hi Mike,

Perhaps the closest thing to a GRU-7 seat (which equipped the A-6E) in 1/32 scale is the Quickboost GRU-7A, which is intended for the F-14A/B http://www.hyperscale.com/2007/reviews/accessories/qbroundupbg_12.htm. A little cosmetic surgery on the head box and lower seat pan sides followed by the installation of a single loop overhead ejection handle would make for a pretty convincing stand-in, especially if you are trying to depict an "early" A-6E seat, that is, one in service through about 1982. Around that time, MB modified the headrest profile somewhat and changed the shape of the overhead ejection pull ring (it went from spade shaped to U shaped). Despite these mods, which were admittedly rather subtle, they did not change the designation...it was still called a GRU-7.

Avionics/True Details make an Intruder seat too https://www.squadron.com/1-32-Avionix-A-6A-Cockpit-p/blc32061.htm. Although it's marketed for the A-6A (which was equipped with the GRU-5), this seat more closely resembles a GRU-7, and a late one at that (post 1982). A definite improvement over the kit seat, it's not without its problems though, the most obvious being the head box proportions, which give it a stout and blocky look. The molded in shoulder harness lacks the "gathered up" look of the real thing. Rather, Av/TD have molded them "hanging loose," pre-inertial reel style, which would only be accurate for a seat undergoing maintenance.

Hope this helps. And good luck with your build.

Rich

so who makes an accurate seat (GRU-5) for the A-6A? (I've thought the seat in the Avionix cockpit was correct for an A version)
