Tamiya Spitfire SK-N

Recommended Posts

I was going to build this on the side but the more I thought about it, the more I wanted to share. The collective knowledge and recommendations are to much to pass up. Harvey was kind enough to get this kit to me and after watching Dunkirk I was excited to have a go at a Spitfire. This will be an Mk IXc flown by Pilot Officer Donald Moffat-Wilson. I will be building this concurrently with my Wingnut Wings Pfalz, so progress will be slow, but steady hopefully.

And the markings, which will be painted on with Montex Masks:

I plan on starting assembly this evening. Please feel free to offer any advice or tips as I go. I'm still learning and this is my first Tamiya big kit.

And we're off:

I received my replacement wings to revert back to the C wing, and then started priming with Mr. Surfacer Black 1500. I want to try and get a more realistic finish in the cockpit than I've previously achieved. I'm hoping to mix black basing and some washes for a better look.

Wow, looks like you're off to a good start, you're gonna love this kit. thank goodness, you're gonna be painting the markings, the kit is great, but the decals are not so great. too thick and they crack up.

Nice to see another Spitfire kit getting built.

The only real fit problems are the wing leading edge inserts for the cannon barrels. I'd suggest lining up the upper surface and then do any filling/sanding on the bottom.

If you don't like the idea of moving control surfaces, I've been able to leave off the PE hinges and mount them directly to the wing.

I'm knee deep in painting and detailing the tons of smaller cockpit pieces.

Two issues I haven't sorted out are

1) Hand painting vs trying to mask the small areas on the side panels that need to be black. Both seem not great for separate reasons.

2) What color is the seat? Is it leather, or wood or something else?

Howdy TJ,

Great start, I'm building the same kit and for the seat was made of wood. As I have seen in several builds, I use XF-64 Red Brown as a base coat and then some lights with the same paint mixed with flat white. Though I believe there are some products made specifically to replicate wood texture which I don't recall now.

Cheers :piliot:

The seat was not wood. It was made from a synthetic material but I don't have my references to hand to give you the exact details.

I usually use Tamiya Hull Red and then dry brush with a lighter colour to replicate the look, which, lets face it, is what you are after rather then the precise details of the seat construction.
