Two more Corsairs we've never seen before!

Recommended Posts

First glance, overall Gloss Sea Blue, so F4U-1Ds, right?  Guess again!  Thanks to the inimitable Mr. Bell, we've discovered that the last approximately 700 FG-1As that Goodyear built were delivered in GSB!  We scratched our heads and scratched our heads on these, but once we got that key piece of information, it all fell into place.  These birds are from VMF-223 in Samar, Philippines in 1945.  We found some 8mm home movies that had been (thankfully) uploaded to YouTube by the pilot of "Chief Montana" (Mr. James Sykes).  There's some amazing footage in his films, with full narration.  Not sure if Mr. Sykes is still with us, but we'd sure like to find out!

There were two airplanes in the film that we felt we had enough information to go on: FG-1A 14426 "Chief Montana", and FG-1A 14447 "Dopey".  Of note are the yellow stripes on the prop blades - a first that we've never seen in any other squadron anywhere, and the unusual FG-1A configuration with overall GSB.

These great looking Marine birds will be on our forthcoming sheet!

Fascinating video.

Very rarely see fresh WWII film, especially narrated by the cameraman.

There must be quite a lot of this stuff hidden in lofts throughout the country?
