DesTROYer's Tamiya 1/32 P-51D Mustang 77 Squadron RAAF 1950

Recommended Posts

After finishing one of my other 1/72 projects, today I started on my next big project. A Tamiya 1/32 P-51D Mustang which will be done up as a RAAF 77 Squadron plane, based out of Japan during the early years of the Korean Police Action.

I have been collecting a bit of aftermarket for this for a while, though whilst doing so, I'll be using much of the what you see here. I'll be using my Silhouette cutter again for many of the markings.

So after spending in the morning pouring over my copy of Mustangs, ADF serials, Large Scale Planes and some other books, I got started.

It always feels great making the first cut on a new kit.

The first two assembled pieces.

A few hours later I had the sub-assemblies of the Supercharged Merlin together and ready for paint.

I'm loving the details on this engine.

A few coats of Tamiya Semi Gloss Black later.

A little detail work and dry brushing, and its well on its way.

Still a lot to go though. I want to try my hand at the fuel lines and ignition leads, though the thought of it does make me nervous.

Next stage is underway, but thats enough for now.

Terrific choice for your build. I've built quite a few of the Tamiya Mustangs, some with all the AM and some OOB; simply a fantastic kit.

Very nice start on the Merlin and a mini kit by herself.

Will be following all the way

Kepp 'em coming

Looks great Troy - always like to see a RAAF bird. Did 77 Sqn have the Grumpy Monkey back in Korea? Would be great to see that.

Reckon you should totally break out the micro brushes and paint the engine. My advice would be - if you don't have an Optivisor it'll be the best modelling purchase you ever made.

Cheers

Jim

As I understand it Jim, the grumpy Monkey did not appear on a plane until the Mirages.  I am more than happy to be corrected though.

I have ordered some new Titanium paint this morning, so yes I will be breaking out the Optivisor.  Just hope I can keep my hands steady enough for all those little bolt heads.  Might have a calming bourbon or two first.

Got back into the office agin this morning and got back to work.  Started on further detailing the engine by painting on the bolt heads, adding fuel and oil lines.

Then finally, I put my dorky optiviser on and whipped these up.  Had to stop for the night when my brain started leaking out my ears.

I know your pain with the seat belts. I pick my eyes off the bench every time I do a set. It would be a great idea to sell these completed for us old guys. Great work so far, looking forward to more.

Thanks for the support guys. After a long needed sleep in this morning I got back into it.  I won't bore you with the detail, but I got the pilots seat done and mounted on the armour plate.

Then got on to masking up and painting the rest of the cockpit and fuel tank.  The Mustang I am modelling is A68-720, and being a 700 Serialed RAAF Mustang, has the Battery that is usually installed behind the pilot, is moved to the engine bay and a second radio unit is installed in it's place.  After looking at photos of the sending radio on line, I was delighted to find the radio is included on the D-Sprue though the two parts are marked as not used in the instructions. The following photos shows were I finished up for the day. Still a lot of detailing work to go.  Some things are not even glued in to place yet but its really coming together.
