From what I’ve read, the aircraft was designed for the Peregrine engine and would have required an extensive redesign to use Merlins. If I ever do snatch a Valkyrie, which I just might, I'll do it in a theoretical production scheme of some imagined ally of the US. I saw a very nice one some years ago done in a silver topsides with white undersides USAF SAC scheme with blue sash which suited it very well. fastterry
The fitting of Merlins to the Whirlwind has been discussed many times before. As Dave Williams has said the aircraft was designed for Peregrines and would have needed a major redesign, however one of the major reasons that there was only 100 made was that they had a complicated structure and were time consuming and costly to produce. I'm sure if they had been easier to build RR may well have been asked to spend time on refining the Peregrine. All this with the BoB in the background and the need for more Hurricanes and Spitfires. de Havilland came up with the perfect twin Merlin powered single seat fighter in the Hornet which hopefully SH will do next. Anyway I too have been fascinated by the Whirlwind since I was a kid and will buy at least one of these kits as soon as I am able. TRF
Bradleygolding
Well Gents, I believe that the Whirlwind Fighter Project did find some documents at Westlands that suggested one had been Merlin equipped and performed very well, but was considered too late to make changes. Petter did apparently design it for Merlins, but changed to Peregrines quite early on. Also Rolls Royce worked on the Carbs to much improved performance, but the Air Ministry refused to make the changes to existing aircraft. A recent thread on the Flypast Forums (Before the changes) also came to the conclusion that the props were wrong for the speeds needed. Mach nos etc. Steve PS: Really can't wait for this model. Only around 100 built, standard RAF camo, unspectacular & short career. Am I missing something here? Hi well there was all the nose art ones, 'hitler in the gallows' , the 'gremlin' one , etc .... P6994 that flew in the USA, (fairly sure it was repainted there from eye witness accounts), the op starkey scheme, the original PR machines that were built but converted to fighters, and the prototypes, with and without the longer nose and the sharkmouth one and the 'civilian' one cheers jerry p.s. and the one R-R modified with different carb intakes Edited September 24, 2020 by brewerjerry Rick Griewski and Alburymodeler 1

fastterry
Yep, that's the one. Already have two Trumpeter ones including a Grey Matter conversion for one of them. I'm pretty sure I'll spring for a couple of Whirlwinds when they come out, as I said before one in TLS and one in DFS. TRF
