Tamiya Spitfire XVI- TD248

Recommended Posts

Thanks guys! I was slowly chipping away at the build but I'm back at it in full now that the Spitfire 22 is done and the Grey Nurse nearly there too.

I started with the RB rad screens.

These are a huge improvement over the kit ones.

Finally, I was at the step that was a bit challenging- the red stripes on the fuselage and wings.

I taped the cowl panels in place on the fuselage and then masked the stripe off. To get the correct width,I cut a piece off from the decal sheet and used it as a spacer.

I then covered the rest with green painter's tape.

I did a base coat of Flat Red and then a top coat of Gloss Red.

Unfortunately it looks like Gunze changed the formula for their silver paint as it lifted a bit. I'm didn't do that on my F-104 build which is why I used it but this was a new bottle of paint. Guess there will be some touch up needed.

The prop spinner and landing gear are next up after the touch ups.

My youngest is turning 4 tomorrow so it might be Monday before I get more done though.

Now that's starting to look like 248! Nice clean work...she's going to look a stunner when finished!  :goodjob:

I just hope that my build looks half as good as your's when finished!

If you fancy another project to go with 248, Eddie also owned a Yak 11..... :whistle:

Keeping tuned in!  :popcorn:

Best regards;
Steve

Just love the paint work - smooth as silk.

Wishing your son, a Very Happy Fourth Birthday.

Wow! Striking scheme! Happy 4th for the young one, Carl. Congrats.

Thanks Shaka! We managed to survive 8 or so screaming, running young 'uns for the day. Now we have until next year before we have to do it again.

Thanks Steve! Unfortunately, the paint lifting has become a major issue. It looks like the clear coat isn't sticking to the silver and any attempts at fixing it is only making the problem worse. It's also causing the edges of the red stripes to break apart so they no longer have a sharp edge to them. I think I may just have to strip it back and start over. If so, I'm trying to decide what paint to use.

Thanks Peter! Just need to solve the lifting problems and I'll be happy.

Here he is with his older brother.

It's so hard to have him keep a straight face in a photo.

So, I broke out the Tamiya lacquer thinner and brushes...

I'm going to take a different approach this time. I'm going to paint the stripes on first and then mask over them. This way, I will minimize the amount of masking that needs to done on top of the silver paint.

Hi Carl;

Sorry to hear of the set back with the paint. Such a shame as it looked superb. Total wrench having to strip back and start again. As Shaka said, I would have lost all heart too and walked away...so kudos for moving on and putting it right.

Still tuned in!  :popcorn:

Best regards;
Steve

What a disappointment!

Silver finishes are always tricky...but it had worked perfectly before, so really a nasty shock!

I think your new approach is a good solution.

Good luck!

Alain

Thanks Alain! I was quite surprised by the paint issues as I had used the same paint on my F-104 without any problems.

There definitely was a formula change as the paint in the jar looked different one I compared then afterwards.
