BloorwestSiR
That's very true on things being relative Max. This is a huge improvement from how my bench used to look. I assembled the main wing and set it aside to dry. Next, I did the final assembly of the cockpit. In place of the gun sight, I mounted a box to represent the radio. I then attached it to the right fuselage half and joined them together. The blue tube is grease that Tamiya provides for the sliding portion of the canopy. It's so the mount for it moves smoothly. I can't believe they even thought of that. With the fuselage together, I mated up the wings to it. That's it for now. Tomorrow is my oldest's 6th birthday so I don't think they'll be to much bench time. Carl KiwiZac, Alain Gadbois, MikeC and 3 others
Shaka HI
I can attest to that (bench was a lot worst)! Happy Birthday to the "eldest"! BloorwestSiR

BloorwestSiR
The control surfaces were put together. Having figured out I can skip all the metal rods and PE hinges is a real time saver. With the standard span wing tips and control surfaces assembled, she's really starting to look like a Spitfire now. BloorwestSiR
I can't believe it's been over a month since I last updated this build thread. I have been slowly working away on the Spitfire with the biggest challenge having been trying to find a suitable silver paint. I finally ended up using Gunze H8 silver. The engine is just dry fit to see how it looks. I've also assembled the rad fairings and the tailplanes. To keep the lines of the plane clean, the rad flaps will be closed. BloorwestSiR
Thanks guys! I was slowly chipping away at the build but I'm back at it in full now that the Spitfire 22 is done and the Grey Nurse nearly there too. I started with the RB rad screens. These are a huge improvement over the kit ones. Finally, I was at the step that was a bit challenging- the red stripes on the fuselage and wings. I taped the cowl panels in place on the fuselage and then masked the stripe off. To get the correct width,I cut a piece off from the decal sheet and used it as a spacer. I then covered the rest with green painter's tape. I did a base coat of Flat Red and then a top coat of Gloss Red. Unfortunately it looks like Gunze changed the formula for their silver paint as it lifted a bit. I'm didn't do that on my F-104 build which is why I used it but this was a new bottle of paint. Guess there will be some touch up needed. The prop spinner and landing gear are next up after the touch ups. My youngest is turning 4 tomorrow so it might be Monday before I get more done though. BloorwestSiR
Wow! Striking scheme! Happy 4th for the young one, Carl. Congrats. Thanks Shaka! We managed to survive 8 or so screaming, running young 'uns for the day. Now we have until next year before we have to do it again. Unfortunately, the paint lifting has become a major issue. It looks like the clear coat isn't sticking to the silver and any attempts at fixing it is only making the problem worse. It's also causing the edges of the red stripes to break apart so they no longer have a sharp edge to them. I think I may just have to strip it back and start over. If so, I'm trying to decide what paint to use. Carl
