Great to see this project off the SOD and towards completion!  Can you talk a little bit more about the markings on White 48?  I've never seen those fuselage crosses before.

Very unusual aren't they John as is the style of the the white 48. I will post a couple of pictures and a bit more information on the airframe tomorrow.

So getting fully to grips with this build again but first of all John (Thunnas) mentioned the unusual markings on this airframe.

I first came across this airframe when I purchased "Captured Eagles" Volume 1 by Roger S Geamperle (Vintage Eagle) which is a must have book if you can find it and has White 48 on the front cover

White 48 was a refurbished F-8 with parts used from various other airframes so a bit of a patch work quilt effect. The airframe was used for training purposes but was captured by the allies and slowly stripped apart. Here are a few pictures courtesy of Rogers wonderful book

And made a start on the engine installation by getting the bearer frame fitted to the bulkhead.

Interested to see how well the engine fits now but I'll let that dry overnight before trying.

I like the color scheme very much!  And thank you for sharing the photos of White 48, Andy!  Just an observation but the thickness of the fuselage crosses seem to be standard in the archive photos but yours are thinner, similar to the upper wing crosses.

A little more done on White 48, managed to complete the Propeller and main U/C legs followed by finally unmasking the cockpit after all this time and fitting the tail wheel access panel.

Very happy with progress and the list of to do bits is steadily shrinking!

I'm about to assemble my LG and was wondering where those brake lines terminated, but thanks to your photo now I know.

Great work on a great subject.

Hi Andy,

It's really great that you continue with this build. I also have my Revell Fw 190 to complete that I had started around the same time as you did yours. Unfortunately, when I tried to re-rivet the fuselage before painting, the cockpit tube became lose which evaporated most of my motivation. It can still be pushed up by a hole on the lower fuselage (that will be covered by the center strut for the fuel tank), but I needed to work on something else before I find my motivation to finish it. It is almost ready to be painted.

Thank you for your kind words about my book. I am glad that the pictures were inspring. I may have mentioned it before, but by pure luck I was able to find an original Kodachrome slide of White 48 after I published my book. It will be featured in Volume 2 together with the name and story of the pilot (which again, I found out only by pure luck when the grandson of a pilot who flew together with the pilot of White 48 on their last flight home contacted me regarding a different topic).

Looking forward to see how your completed White 48! Keep up the great work.

Regards,

Roger

Some more done and now the big BMW engine is fitted, very nearly went back to the SOD after huge difficulty getting the exhausts fitted to the engine and after much trimming, cursing and repainting they behaved.
