and........................ modeling is FUN !! When I get started on a kit, I find doing the research is as much or more fun than building the kit it self. I have a huge collection of all sorts, have met many war time pilots and ground crew, and with that came another hobby, collecting memorabilia, and autographs, things I have in m collection that were freely given me is the map and pilots wings Flt/Lt Al Harley had with him when he went on a rhubarb op with W/C Bod Stanford-Tuck, when Tuck was shot down, in 1942 on that fateful mission. Personal letters from Paul Tibbetts,  AVM Johnnie Johnson, many letters from Gp/Capt Hamish Mahaddie, personal items from W/C Hugh Godefroy RCAF, Chuck Yeager, Russ Bannock and I could go on, but that is what model building has done, plus I have made many friends in this hobby, so yeah, it's all good !!

So, basically, white people can afford to get into 1/32 modelling. 

 

I dunno....I think at most that is a small part of it.  As hobbies go, modelling is not really an expensive endeavor.  I can only speak intelligently of the USA, but I participate in other hobbies that are much more expensive than modelling....one example being the modified/racing/trackday car scene....and that is pretty ethnically diverse....although still definitely dominated by older males.

 

Golf is pretty diverse....and I am sure anyone who participates in that game will attest it is far more expensive than model building. 

 

Like most of us, I went through a model building phase as a child, and at that age it was very diverse among young males....I remember males of all races participating.  To me it is more among adults that the hobby "turns white".

 

I think the reasons model building is so "white" are much more complex and cultural than simple finances....although touting that theory does not mean that I can even begin to explain the specifics of it. 

 

Another issue....this is an English language forum.  I am sure there are many, many modelers  in China, Japan, South Korea, etc. who simply do not participate on LSP because of language barriers.  In fact I would wager that "per capita" modeling is a far bigger thing in Japan than in North America or any of the European countries.

I agree Jeff, after the initial "ooo shiny" wears off from a kit purchase, I enjoy the hours of reading, googling and research that go into a project.

It's funny.  I built my first model at age 5, the 1/72 Lindbergh Komet (it was only about 4 or 5 pieces).  My dad and brother built models and I wanted to as well.

 

Picked up a lot of ideas from my brother, though he became increasingly an armor and diorama guy.

 

Have never really stopped doing it, probably because even in high school I was young and nerdy.  OK, once I had a girlfriend things slowed down and I also do a lot of wargaming now as well.

 

 

 

 

My son is definitely a 21st century product--he is very much into making his own worlds on the computer, but I think once he actually starts building stuff he might surprise himself.

 

I'm not sure why that means there's so many of us pale middle aged guys (some of you are older than I thought!)

What a fun thread! No offense meant when I mentioned race/ethnicity, gentlemen. Coming from Hawaii and its inherent diversity -- it's something we actually discuss quite casually here, but sometimes I forget this isn't Hawaii. Now, by no means am I claiming there's no racism here, but it's rarely overt. And it sure as heck doesn't stop us from marrying and/or producing babies outside of our respective races (but I do wish you white dudes stop ogling my sisters...LOL).

 

I used to travel a lot and I've noticed that I NEED this diversity and I would feel quite out of place where a single ethnicity tend to dominate. I've experienced racism in the deep South and in well developed countries in Asia as well -- first hand. I do hope that hate dies with the millennials and later generations, but that might be asking a little too much, still.... Aloha!

 

(Someone mentioned facial hair -- How many here served in the military? Those who leave the service tend to gain weight, hair gets much longer and they stop shaving. At least that's been my observation!)
