Starfighter
The canopies seem to become a never ending story. Building the canopy frames from self-adhesive copper foil worked better than expected, so I went ahead and masked the whole thing using Tamiya tape and, to save some time, Mr. Masking NEO. Well, I shouldn't have done that - Future and Mr Masking NEO don't like each other. This is what I ended up with - it's obvious where the canopy was masked with Tamiya tape... I had to remove the Future with ammonia and re-polish the canopy AGAIN for at least two hours to get the canopy clear again. Saving time by using masking fluid, you know? Never again! The next step is to touch up some minor flaws, add the interior details and to add the glass joints using thin black decal stripes. Then, the same procedure has to be repeated for the rear canopy - well, maybe not that masking fluid and polishing thing, if you know what I mean. Rainer Hoffmann
Sorry to hear that, Ben. But you made a great recovery. The canopy frames look superb. What self-adhesive copper foil exactly did you use? I'll have to try that. I already have some ideas where this stuff could be useful. Starfighter
I actually bought a roll of that stuff years ago in China. To my understanding, it should be available in most stores selling plumber supplies. Self-adhesive aluminum foil exists as well, but I prefer working with copper. Works great for any kind of raised structures. A-10LOADER and Rainer Hoffmann

easixpedro
Ben, Finally had a chance to get you the insignia for the helmets. If you look at the Kanji on the radome, it's the same thing that is on the helmets. Should be easy to make with a decal after watching you pull off everything else! https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:US_Navy_070910-N-7883G-012_An_aircraft_director_guides_the_pilot_of_an_E-A-6B_Prowler_assigned_to_the_of_Electronic_Attack_Squadron_(VAQ)_136_to_a_catapult_aboard_USS_Kitty_Hawk_(CV_63).jpg https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:US_Navy_090328-N-5277R-002_Lt.j.g._Ben_Reust,_a_pilot_assigned_to_Electronic_Attack_Squadron_(VAQ)_136,_poses_for_photos_on_the_wing_of_an_EA-6B_Prowler_aircraft_during_the_Naval_Air_Facility_annual_Cherry_Blossom_Festival_and.jpg http://www.navy.mil/view_image.asp?id=27261 http://www.navy.mil/view_image.asp?id=27312 The symbol was pretty much put on everything. It supposedly meant 'The spirit of Attack' which to the Japanese is really the meaning of Bushido. You'd get some strange looks from the locals, as there's some long history with that word and the old Imperial Japanese Forces. Won't go into it on your build page, but hopefully the links will help! Keep up the great work, she looks amazing -Peter Thanks a lot for the links, Peter, these pics are very interesting! To be honest, I was more after information about the symbols on the helmets of the deck crew - I am lucky to be in contact with an ex-CO of VAQ-136 who was kind enough to send me detailed photos of his helmet and provided me with callsigns of other ECMOs and a pilot who flew Ironclaw 500 back in 2000, so I have what I need to paint the helmets. Sadly, I won't be able to have decals printed for them in time before the show, so I'll have to paint them by hand. Hope this will turn out OK. Starfighter
"Knob" on his bang seat... ...and in his office. The helmet looks rather crappy, but I can't get it any better anymore. My skills with a brush were better a few years ago... The front canopy, ejection seats and external tank have been fitted as well. stusbke, johncrow, 109 and 8 others
