US Navy ground / carrier equipment - scratchbuilt

Recommended Posts

Hi folks,

in this thread, I will show you some of my ongoing projects - mostly carrier based vehicles used by the US Navy and Marines. This thread is not about the well-known vehicles or kits already available on the market but about the stuff nobody has (yet) cared about. This means: scratch building - using oldschool and 'modern' techniques.  B)

Two and different projects are currently in the making. The first one is the carrier based deck sweeper - in both 'early' (short) and 'late' (long) versions. The CAD files are still in progress; the 'early' version is almost finished, though.

Early version:

The 'late' version looks like this - as already mentioned, there is more work to do on this one:

The second one is the new carrier tractor which is being used on the Teddy Roosevelt since mid 2014. This one already 'exists' on my desk - here is what it looks like:

Sadly, it is extremely difficult to find good photos and informations about these vehicles. I am pretty sure I have most informations and/or pics available on the net, but if anybody has pics, drawings or whatever of these vehicles, I would be very thankful if you'd be willing to share your information. High-resolution pics are also welcome as many of the photos on the net are rather small.

I will try to update this thread on a regular basis - comments, critique and questions are welcome as usual! :)

Some progress has been made since the last post - I have designed and 3D printed quite a few carrier deck vehicles during the last year and a half.

Among others, I have made two versions of the Tennant deck scrubber (late version shown)...

....the new mule A/S32A-49 and the A/S32-31A which has by now been replaced by the A-49.

I am currently painting one of the A/S32-31As:

Looking extremely sweet Ben !!!

I am a bit puzzled though to find these in the "non-LSP section", since I am pretty sure they will be used in conjunction with Your EA-6B...???

Speaking of which:

I've been fortunate enough to see the beast up, close & personal recently during a contest in Belgium. Simply beyond words...!!!

Regards Rudy.

I'm glad you like it! I have created a separate thread as more vehicles will follow, but you are right, Rudy - the A/S32-31A will be used on my Kitty Hawk diorama along with the Prowler.

Mark, I had to add the non-skid on top - as already mentioned, this isn't a kit but was created by myself. I am thinking about releasing some of the vehicles later, though if there is a market for that kind of stuff.

In the meantime, I have added some dirt and grime and painted the "8A" on bonnet and side using hand cut masks. The Huffer is just in the printer and should be ready on Monday.

As I currently don't have a lot of time for "real" modelling, I have spent my lunch breaks working on a correct and properly detailed P-16 fire truck to complete my range of carrier deck vehicles. The small parts are still missing and will be drawn next.
