Nice work Den. Looks like it's been caught by a spider!

Kev

Thanks Kev, It does a bit like a spiders been at it, on one the spiders web slipped at the last minute, but luckily it did not touch the paint.

Nice to seeing you back on these Den, you're getting close to the finish line!

If your armor glass bit is sitting vertical, that might have caused the fit issue, as it's supposed to lean forward a bit on the real thing:

Blast ! but I think I might be able to bend it a bit, thanks for that.

It sure will, I've just given them another coat of Mr Surfacer and am busy tracking down all the little bits that are still wrong, could be a while

Thank you Loic, just to push you a bit further towards a Yak here is the 1/32 Aeropoxy Yak-3 that I built a long time ago, must repaint it one day.

Well the Mr Surfacer went on well and highlighted all the lumps bumps and pits that should not be there, so after much filling and sanding later they are ready for more Mr Surfacer

After another round of filling, sanding and polishing it was time to put some paint on, after buying lots of pots of paint and comparing them to AKAN's enamel AMT-7 I picked Humbrol 89 as a fair match, see paint chips below

tnyuC3.jpg

And so on with the paint, the results surprised me, it looks so dark, I nearly reached for something lighter when I had another look at the paint chips and the original paint on the French Yak-3 that is being restored, so I have left well alone. The two photos below came out looking like different colours under the same lighting conditions, in reality the actual finish is probably somewhere between the two.

Terrific work, Den. I must try these Akan paints some day (if I can find them).

Kev

Hi Kev, I have the enamels and only use them to find matches from other enamels such as Xtracolor, Humbrol or MM as they are far to smelly to airbrush in the house, I can't comment on the acrylic versions though but other people seem to like them.

Well I did wimp out and airbrushed a lightened coat of H89 over the original coat, I normally do this to make it a bit more "interesting" rather than a bland solid coat, but in this case it did need to be a bit lighter but not by much, here is a picture of the French Yak-3 under restoration with the original AMT-7 on view, it's a lot darker than you would imagine. I hope that the owner of this photo does not mind me using it, if so I will remove it.

Back from the holidays and I must crack on with the Yaks, so some more paint is called for, one Yak will be in the AMT-11/12 scheme (Grey/Grey) and the other will be in the AMT-4/6 (Green/Black) scheme for the AMT-11 I have gone with Xtracolor X6 Ocean Grey which is a pretty good match for my AKAN AMT-11 paint chip. So out came the airbrush and away we went. It does look totally different with some matt varnish on.

And for the other AMT-4/6 one I have gone for Model Master Interior Green 34151, it may look a bit different in the photo as both my cameras do not like green so I had to "adjust" the colour a bit.

Next step is the paper masks/Blu Tac sausages

Those are looking good wit the paint on, Dennis! So you used Ocean Grey for the AMT-11 Grey-Blue - I'll have to see if MM have this in enamel. I still think the MM Interior Green looks good for the AMT-4 Green.

Thank you all for the kind words, hopefully Kai the colours that I am using will look realistic AMT-11 (Xtracolor X6 Ocean Grey) and AMT-6 (Xtracolor Panzer Grey X800) and may encourage others to try some VVS subjects. I'm now getting to the stage that I really enjoy, it's time for some more paint and the markings, normally I try to paint on the markings but the stars are a pain to mask with the white outline and thin red outline so decals it will be this time, here is the AMT-11/12 Yak, it will look better with the matt varnish coat on.

And here is the other one all ready for decals, the black (AMT-6) is Colourcoats Soviet AMT Black ACS04, though any black would do, I "glossed" the areas that the decals will be placed on with a nail buffer, using the buffing side rather than using a gloss coat..

Wow, the paint on both is really well done so far. Im always a proponent of great pre-paint pepping with smoothing and sanding essential for getting a smooth finish where the finish will be seen.

Looking forward to more!
