mgbooyv8
Hi guys, There were three attempts to paint the spinner. I started with white, the tip has to be blue. It appeared that Revell 50 was a good match for the checker decals. On the first attempt I masked the spinner with thin strips of masking take. That came out wobbly so the paint had to go. Strip and start again with the white. I drew the line, measured the local diameter ant cut a circle with a compass cutter in a piece of carton: The rest was masked with Maskol. Guess what: the blue paint came off with the mask. Third attempt: I started with the blue, let it dry for a couple of days, used the same mask, et voilá: succes! In anticipation of a antenna wire I drilled a hole in the fin: A better study of the pictures of QV/V showed it had no antenna wire, so it was not needed. I did not drill a hole in the canopy. The radio's behind the seat were simple but OK. They got representations of quick-release clamps, some paint and were installed. I had repainted the top of the fuel tank black, as per most pictures. The fuel filler neck and a few additional wires were installed as well. The flaps were glued on with PVA glue. After this had set with a little help of a few strips of tape, they were fixed in place with CA. Then, the final bits were installed and the model received a mist of Alclad Gloss cote onstrategic places to dull the shine. I decided to keep it clean. A litte bit of Flory Dark wash was added at a few places (not so noticeable in the pictures), but not in the panel lines, because they are rather heavy and give enough contrast to the model in real life. And that means..... The Mustang is rescued from the shelve of doom and ready!!! More pictures in the RFI section. Thanks for looking. I hope you endoyed the ride. xmh53wrench
Totally agree with Kev! Its a real shame these kits get a bad wrap. Really with the exception of the upper engine cowling these kits are quite impressive.....you good sir, have cured even that ailment to my eye with the choice of livery and those extra stripes bordering the glare panel. The rest of the extras that you have added to this build are exceptional. Ya made me extra proud of my Airfix builds and those in my stash! Glad to see this one see the light of day Peter! Thanks again for posting up..... ......and for setting the bar even higher mgbooyv8
mgbooyv8
Thanks Lou, means a lot! I agree with you that these kits get a bad wrap undeservedly. Indeed, the paint scheme masks the so-so nose contours. Nowadays, the old big Airfix kits are relatively cheap, which helps to try one. They will always look impressive. The latest issues all come with large and good decal sheets, which helps as well. I wonder with what gems you will come up with when you work your way through your stash. xmh53wrench
Yes that new decal sheet is quite impressive! I have 3 in the stash to go with the 2 currently under construction one as an F-6 and the other as Precious Metal. As it stands right now for my stash I want to build the 1965ish Reno racer Bardahl Special #8, an early D with no fillet and OD topsides ala "Nooky Booky II", and maybe an OD "B" conversion for my third....subject to change of course....LOL
huntert7
Hi Peter Finally finished the Mustang. Looks great in RAF colors. And with all your models that lived for a long time on the shelf of Doom they are prize winners. Henk
mgbooyv8
Thanks Henk! A late answer, Lou. That's a very interesting list of Mustang builds. Funny that you consider an OD "B" conversion of the Airfix kit. I had a second one myself for the same conversion. I gave it away recently to a friend who will make a racer out of it. (No, he is not active on LSP ) So many models, so little time. I will start the Kittyhawk Texan (will be a Dutch Noordduyn Harvard) after finishing a couple of other non-LSP models. Dazzled
A superb build and thanks for the details on how you achieved the metallic finish. Very helpful and informative.
Bomber_County
Stunning build, I have an original This Is It Airfix P51D I purchased in 1974. I started it in maybe 1975, so having been inspired by this build to actually try and finish it, that equates to it being on the shelf / box of doom for 41 years.......oh my........... Thanks for the nudge....
