Sgt Shultz II
When you guys build open cockpit planes, specially modern planes, why don't you put the safety pins in the seats and the downlocks on the canopy actuators and gear??? Has anybody ever built a kit with all the covers and flags and safety devices on?? What do you all do with the figures that sometimes come with the kits?? Zero77
That's only a question of taste. Personnally, i never put a figure in my cockpits (i like figures, but better for AFVs), and i dont like very much a lot of safety pins, intake covers, and so on, as i prefer to let more details visible (even if it is not really realistic). But that's only my personnal choice ! Edited September 5, 2014 by Zero77 andromeda673
Pascal
For me the answer is simple : those parts are rarely included in the kit. Don't know if the are available in an after-market set. Pilot figures obscure the detail in the cockpit, ground crew are for a diorama imo. They are (the RBF tags are available from Eduard and certainly from a few others, and many resin or PE producers are making intake covers). The canopies and gear locks are quite uncommon though, but do not seem too much tricky to build from scratch. I agree for the pilot figures in cockpits. Tony T
Yes, the accessories are rare. I like AGE like GPUs etc but am most definitely *not* a diorama modeller - those are for cup-o-mud AFV modellers who present their models on little grassy, muddy bases giving them a taxidermy look, like a stuffed squirrel. Clean, clear glass shelf for me. Open inlets. Preferably closed canopies. Accessories on the glass, yes. andromeda673
I've never put too much thought into that, I'm an open cockpit guy, but I almost never do figures or seat belts, that's one of the things I'd like to get better at though. Sgt Shultz II
Thanks geedubelyer! The main reason for asking is the fact that as a maintenance guy getting in and out of cockpits we were taught to make sure all the safety devices were installed before getting into the cockpit. Sitting on a "hot" seat was not recommended, and if the air system wasn't pumped up the canopy could fall on you so we always installed them if they weren't already there. SJL
I always have the head knocker in the safe position on my A-4 models. It reminds me why I still have a dent in the back of my bounce!
LSP_K2
I think lots of modelers don't use the safety locks and pins/flags just because it seems to be more trouble than it's worth. As to pilot figures, if they're sitting, I throw them in the trash. If standing, I save for a display where I want to illustrate scale of the beast. thierry laurent
Most modellers do not put the safety flags or locks for a very simple reason: they don't know where to put them and/or how they look like and this is quite understandable. Indeed, if you had not access to a maintenance manual, how can you know this for all the different jets?

Has anybody ever built a kit with all the covers and flags and safety devices on?? What do you all do with the figures that sometimes come with the kits?? For you first question! Some of us build the kit as it is about to take off. Just waiting for the pilot to jump in. As the Crew Chief has removed the REMOVE BEFORE FLIGHT pins. Or we have the Pilot taxing the aircraft. For your second question! Yes on all the covers and flags and safety devices on. Mostly for 1/48th scale as they are supplied by after market co. But you can find FOD Covers for the F-4. The F-15 has some angle of attack sensor covers in 1/32 https://www.google.com/search?hl=en&site=imghp&tbm=isch&source=hp&biw=1708&bih=761&q=tamiya+f-15&oq=tamiya+f-15&gs_l=img.12..0j0i24l9.1723.531920.0.537183.13.13.0.0.0.0.159.1274.8j5.13.0....0...1ac.1.53.img..0.13.1257.CCQUMp-tnWg#facrc=_&imgdii=_&imgrc=gEfK6Qg8qcDqUM%253A%3BvNO4ZuXsVtC2iM%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Fwww.helmo.gr%252Fgallery2%252Fd%252F52729-1%252Fz23.jpg%253Fg2_GALLERYSID%253DTMP_SESSION_ID_DI_NOISSES_PMT%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Fwww.helmo.gr%252Findex.php%253Foption%253Dcom_content%2526task%253Dview%2526id%253D1124%2526Itemid%253D40%3B800%3B600 https://www.google.com/search?hl=en&site=imghp&tbm=isch&source=hp&biw=1708&bih=761&q=tamiya+f-15&oq=tamiya+f-15&gs_l=img.12..0j0i24l9.1723.531920.0.537183.13.13.0.0.0.0.159.1274.8j5.13.0....0...1ac.1.53.img..0.13.1257.CCQUMp-tnWg#facrc=_&imgdii=_&imgrc=Bul66uqdumot9M%253A%3BEG3kqDo71zcYyM%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Fmodelaircraftmagazine.com%252Fimages%252FShows%252Feday%252Fmodels_f15e.jpg%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Fmodelaircraftmagazine.com%252Ffull_site%252Fframes%252Fevents%252Freviews%252F007.htm%3B500%3B350 https://www.google.com/search?hl=en&site=imghp&tbm=isch&source=hp&biw=1708&bih=761&q=tamiya+f-15&oq=tamiya+f-15&gs_l=img.12..0j0i24l9.1723.531920.0.537183.13.13.0.0.0.0.159.1274.8j5.13.0....0...1ac.1.53.img..0.13.1257.CCQUMp-tnWg#facrc=_&imgdii=Bul66uqdumot9M%3A%3BYDe1a7q1L-JBCM%3BBul66uqdumot9M%3A&imgrc=Bul66uqdumot9M%253A%3BEG3kqDo71zcYyM%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Fmodelaircraftmagazine.com%252Fimages%252FShows%252Feday%252Fmodels_f15e.jpg%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Fmodelaircraftmagazine.com%252Ffull_site%252Fframes%252Fevents%252Freviews%252F007.htm%3B500%3B350 Look at this link http://www.umm-usa.com/mygallery/galleryf15c.html Some of us build the figures/ Pilot.
