Tony T Posted May 6, 2014 Posted May 6, 2014 Yankee Station 1972: VF-24 F-8J Crusader 203 / BuNo 149145 Vought F-8J using the 1/32 Trumpeter offering. There will be a hiatus in the Summer owing to a planned relocation but I'm aiming to pick up and complete at least one of the projects by the end of the Autumn. (The kits must fit back in the boxes at this stage!) Pictures will follow about once a week, with a break early-mid Summer, subject to.. I'm currently forced to download images from camera to PC, email them to myself as attachments, then pick them up on an iPad to upload to the host site before copying them here - phew! How daft is that!? For some reason my PC freezes with photo bucket. Barely anything glued yet, but stuff has come off the sprues ready to roll... 1/32 Trumpeter F-8J Aries cockpit Aries jet nozzle Eduard PE seat straps G Factor metal landing gear Masters pitot Rhino seamless inlet (on its way - yippee!) Zotz decals for VF-24 I'm building two 1/32 Trumpeter/Zactomodels Vietnam era SLUFs in parallel whilst on a Vought/LTV jet binge, and will post some WIP alongside the Crusader as things progress. Thanks for looking Tony Uncarina, Derek B, Kagemusha and 3 others 6
LSP_Paul Posted May 6, 2014 Posted May 6, 2014 Welcome Tony! I'm really looking forward to your progress on the F-8J. I wish I hadn't already started mine (F-8E) when I came up with the idea for the group build, but at least I can get some ideas from your project on how to finish it some day soon! It looks like you have all you need for an excellent model. All the best, Paul
Derek B Posted May 6, 2014 Posted May 6, 2014 A-7 and F-8, excellent Tony (I quite fancy making an RF-8 one day ). Derek Tony T 1
Uncarina Posted May 6, 2014 Posted May 6, 2014 Tony, This will be a fun build to follow! Cheers, Tom Tony T 1
Tony T Posted May 6, 2014 Author Posted May 6, 2014 (edited) Thanks guys! The F-8J is the focus point but two A-7 Short Little Ugly Fellas (SLUF) are running along behind. I aim to finish the F-8J on-time and see what happens with the A-7s. If anybody can clarify A-7D/E main IP colours I'd be truly grateful! I believe they were black, as was the F-8J main IP< and not grey with black instrument bezels as Eduard have done them. Tony Edited May 6, 2014 by Tony T
Kagemusha Posted May 6, 2014 Posted May 6, 2014 Nice set of goodies Tony - I have all the same as well, sans le Eduard, as well as some French stuff for when I have to make up my mind - looking forward to seeing your Cruze.
Tony T Posted May 6, 2014 Author Posted May 6, 2014 Thanks again. I think Barry answered my question re A-7 IP colour indirectly on this thread at post 1385 http://forum.largescaleplanes.com/index.php?showtopic=49765&page=93 Seems they had the same coloration as F-8s, and the Eduard overlay/bezels will need painting black. Now wishing I had bought Aries 'pits for those - hmm, that might delay the parallel SLUF build a tad. The F-8's Aries 'pit (less seat) will get attention first, then the Aries AB nozzle section and kit fuselage bays, as I'm waiting for the Rhino seamless inlet to arrive (due in about two weeks) before I can close-up the fuselage. Have resisted Aries wheel wells on this build as the kit ones look good and I'm more into weapons systems than plumbing. Goal is mostly buttoned-up except refuelling probe stuck out, variable incidence wing raised and wing tips folded. Currently rummaging around for a pic of the lower fuselage around the air brake, where there's a catapult bridle bar built into a trough (missing from the kit) Will post pics soon if Photo Bucket responds as it's told and not as it wishes (invasively). Youngtiger1 Posted May 7, 2014 Posted May 7, 2014 Oh boy, this is a good one Tony. I hoping to add a F-8J soon into my future stash so, your work will be a great reference. Good luck.
Tony T Posted May 17, 2014 Author Posted May 17, 2014 Rhino seamless F-8 inlet and compressor face arrived this morning, so building will begin in earnest this weekend (after I've finished putting wood stain on the new 6ft fence in the yard). Apologies for the crepe pic but I'm using an old iPad camera to bypass my PC which utterly refuses to talk with Photo-bucket. I will endeavour to improve before posting more or consider a new cellphone with a decent enough built-in camera.need one soon anyway! On inspection of the parts, the Rhino inlet is a major plus and will save considerable filling and sanding. Tony Derek B and LSP_Paul 2
LSP_Paul Posted May 17, 2014 Posted May 17, 2014 Tony, Great to see you got your parts, I'm sure once you start building that will help speed things up! All the best. Paul
Tony T Posted May 21, 2014 Author Posted May 21, 2014 (edited) Making a move at last and will post a pic or two soon. Still problems with the PC/PB interface so will see if iPad snaps will suffice. Got everything I need now for all three Vought/LTV builds (apart from Eduard F-8 exterior - anyone used that? ) so will be lining up the three cockpits ready for CA fixing of sundry parts, then the grey & black paint by the weekend. Seeing the above 1/48th scale kit box top reminded me of happy days building that kit back in 1980, and was making me think of a 1/32nd scale VA-215 A-7B instead of 3rd TFS USAF D, as it's my last chance to build a pair of SLUFs to go along with the sleeker F-8J Crusader (the Zactomodels 'unsquash your SLUF' set now being OOP). So, checker tailed VF-24 F-8J will be accompanied by a backdated Trumpeter/Zactomodels A-7E from VA-27 Royal Maces http://camdecals.com/wp-content/uploads/wpsc/product_images/P32-003.jpg and... Either the Korat shark mouthed A-7D in Vietnam era camo http://philippechristian.free.fr/images/aviation/a7d/a7d.jpg -or- heavily converted A-7B from VA-215 Barn Owls. http://www.hyperscale.com/2007/reviews/decals/images/ad72015reviewrk_2.jpg Anyone ever successfully done an A-7B conversion from the Trumpeter SLUF? I'm thinking two cannons instead of the rotary cannon, plus four new vents for the shootin' irons, slightly modded IP and relocated starter access point. I have a right-hand side Navy nose to turn the 'D into a Navy version - or is that sacrilege? Your opinions count, as I'm very easily swayed and need to start cuts tomorrow! Cheers, Tony Edited May 21, 2014 by Tony T Derek B 1
Tony T Posted May 25, 2014 Author Posted May 25, 2014 Okay, first real progress pics to follow within the next few days. Awaiting Eduard sets to tart up the wheel wells etc before the fuse starts coming together. Working on these features right now: http://www.airliners.net/photo/USA---Navy/Vought-F-8K-Crusader/1285715/L/&sid=39402f30afffe46d811b2b556d03d8d2 A/ missing catapult bridle attach bar and well at the front end of the air brake B/ ALQ-100 DECM antennae - the two strake-like objects between the MLG doors (and need to make a second set for the Linebacker era A-7E) Have settled on joining the VF-24 F-8J with VA-27 A-7E and an A-7D - though the Delta may up as either a Vietnam shark's mouthed beast from Korat, 1972-1973, with JH tailcode - or a non Vietnam GB subject (Colorado Guard Gunsmoke 1981). Thanks for checking in. Will have some pics to post this coming week. Stuff will start zooming... Tony LSP_Paul 1
