Has anyone bought any Humbrol clear matt or clear satin tins recently?  I bought some the other day and its just a thick brown sludge.  Nothing remotely close to how it should look.

Ive mixed and mixed it and it remains a thick brown sludge resembling toffee in a tin!!!

Anyone else come across this?  I for sure will not use it

My Humbrol Matte coat is in a large square jar (great stuff BTW) and when shaken/stirred is cloudy white. Might be fouled from the tin itself?

I would return it for replacement if you can. Pop the top and check it before you leave with the replacement tin though! You might ask if others have returned it?

Sounds as if the product has been compromised. I totally agree to return it.

The varnishes I purchase on cans only does that when there's not much left in them - and even then, generally, they can be thinned down. Perhaps yours are too old? Some stores do keep their cans in stock for much too long, after all... :P

Rohan,

Are we talking about the 14ml tins of 49 and 135 as opposed toe the bottles of matt amd satin cote here?

the 14ml tins is what I have.  I bought them on Ebay and have bought them from before and he states they are fine which I disagree with.  Ive emailed Humbrol as well asking them.  I also bought some locally and they are exactly the same.   So weird I buy them here and from Belgium and all the tins are this thick goo.  They are different batch numbers as well.  Its very odd.  I bought some on Ebay as the local shop has none in stock

The batch numbers are

121137  Matt

130131  matt

154123  satin

Anyone have those batch numbers?  If so, is it the same or normal?

Rohan,

Traditionally they have always required a great deal of stirring both before and during use, although it sounds like you have already done this. I am not 100% certain, but I believe that Humbrol has sourced its paint production away from China some time ago as the quality of the Humbrol paints from there appeared to be somewhat variable - hopefully yours are not older tins from this source (I am certain that Humbrol will do their best to help you with your issues).

Incidentally, I still have many original UK produced tins of Humbrol varnishes from many years ago, but these days I prefer the bottles of matt and satin cote varnishes as they are UV stable and do not yellow with age unlike the tinned varnish.

Regards

I didn't know you could buy the Humbrol clear varnishes in tins Rohan.

I've always got mine in 28ml glass bottles.

The Humbrol satins and matts do settle in both the tins and bottles.

You will hear stories of the "new formula" making things tricky.

I've used new formula satin black and whilst smelling a little different its fine provided its thinned at least 50/50 with thinners (I use Humbrol)

With the matt and satin colours it can take a while to mix them back to a proper liquid form but they do go back for me.

Sometimes adding a few drops of thinners can work.

In the glass jars I use one of those cheap battery coffee stirrers after taking the spring off the end to avoid foaming. Wrap a paper towel over the top of the bottle to avoid splashes and it mixes well.

I do not usually use humbrol paint, but i have heard many complaint toward the new formula, for some colors only. It seems that the problem come from specific pigments, that are not as good as the former pigment. I think it is the case for cadmium, which was great to all reddish (and maybe brownish) colors, but is now forbidden because it is carcinogenic.

But the strange thing with Rohan clear coat is that it is brown, and that it is the same whatever the source is. Very strange indeed.

If you really need some, i have some old tin of those clear coat, brand new.
