Hey Derek, Just checking in.  I have been watching your progress, Doesn't it feel good to finally start cutting on something after figuring out what you have to do?  Looks like you are off to a good start, and nice to that someone else is building something other than a Mustang, Corsair, or Flying Fortress!!

Have a great day, Gary

Seeing the Revell kit compared to drawings, makes me feel sorry for it - almost showing the fat kid a photo of a supermodel, and being told "this is what you should be like":)  The pics of the parts spaced out to sort of match the drawings is a huge improvement in itself.

Thanks Jens. You are right, and I am fairly confident that I can get it roughly to the right shape and size with the inserts that I shall add. The hard part is getting the 'weight loss' and 'muscle toning' correct (I could be talking about me here and not the kit! :D).

Yes, it looks like it´s gonna be time consuming to do this but just quit your day job and it should be ready for next christmas (2014)? I´ll be watching for the next post...

/Stoffe

Thanks Stoffe (That might just be a good idea!  :)).

I started filling in the cockpit holes with plastic card last night - I will post some more pictures when there is something worthwhile to show.

Cheers

The Griffin stirs...

Started filling in the voids with plastic card at the nose section, which will require additinal extention and rework later. I have chosen plastic card of the same average thickness of the kit plastic (which varies from 0.73mm to 1.34mm thickness - the plastic card is 1.06mm thick). In order to add strength to the bond (I have intially used normal polystyrene glue for this as it provides a strong joint), I have bevelled all mating faces to scarf the plastic card into the kit mouldings - the photographs are pretty self explanatory.

First stage. The nose whell bay and cockpit glare shield have been cut away as these items will eventually require relocation and replacement at a later stage.

When I enlarged the Griffin drawings to 1/32 scale I thought that the aircraft was not quite as small as people thought - until I compared it to something that I was familiar with, the Kenetic 1/32 BAe Hawk 100 kit. The Hawk is not considered to be a particularly large aircraft and when compared directly to the Gripen it illustrates just how small the JAS39 really is for a fighter.

Next hurdle was filling in the aperture left by the removal of the gun muzzle and fairing from the underside of the fuselage.

It now also gets a new nose job. I cut the nose radome cone vertically to match the fuselage. I had to file away the kit fuselage internal bulkhead as the nose will later be cut away at the correct fuselage mating point.

As can be seen, the nose section will require both extending aft and raising to match the plans...stay tuned.
