marauderdriver Posted December 3, 2013 Posted December 3, 2013 Nigel You have the eyes, the touch, the patience of a Master Craftsman The work you have done on this kit is beyond incredible and is most inspirational and will be interesting when compared to an OOB kit I am glad to see your MOJO is working well and in the groove and look forward to see this build continue. Just watching and learning Jack
Dan Paxton Posted December 3, 2013 Posted December 3, 2013 Thanks Jack, a bit too complimentary I think? SD, you made the right choice there... the Monogram kit is a beauty!! I can't see the errors against the pics posted here? Apparently, HKM used the Detail and scale drawings, which are apparently..Wrong?? Richard, can you please tell me where those drawings came from? I think theyre the same as mine, from the big brown B-17 book? I'm looking at them and thinking, " I may have made a mistake with my measurements", I cannot see the errors now. Peter, I have become THE B-17 detective. This kit has got me staring at pictures for hours on end!! Jack is right on the money......watching waiting learning.......master

Hi Nigel, Got this drawing from the Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress, Warpaint Series #90 by Kev Darling, this is a very nice book, tomorrow I will scale up to 1:32 and take some measurements and add them to the drawing. Here is one which shows the whole plane. Drawing was done by Richard J. Caruana. [/url] Regards Richard
LSP_Kevin Posted December 3, 2013 Posted December 3, 2013 Richard, just be aware that Caruana's drawings are notorious for being very nicely done, but often quite loose in terms of accuracy. Kev Iain and Alburymodeler 2
Ripaman Posted December 3, 2013 Posted December 3, 2013 Richard, just be aware that Caruana's drawings are notorious for being very nicely done, but often quite loose in terms of accuracy. Kev Thanks Kev that is very good to know, one would think that if you buy books (and I buy alot) and they come with drawings they would be right??? I'am so glad that I got true drawings of the Hurri. Nigel, sorry mate I cannot help you so I take my quote back regard cut away. Regards Richard
Iain Posted December 4, 2013 Posted December 4, 2013 Amazingly brave Nige - am following along in preparation for starting mine at some point. I'm keeping an open mind at this stage regarding what I'll end up doing to her - the flat nose top a certainty though... I'd be very wary of using the 1:72 Revell kit as a reference - the Monogram 1:48 kit would be a better benchmark IMHO. Here's a review of the Revell kit over on Aeroscale by someone who claims to know their B-17s - just goes to show what a minefield this modelling lark can be! And drawings - I wouldn't necessarily trust any! Agree with Kev's comment earlier regarding Caruana drawings as well - tread with caution. Iain Derek B 1
Iain Posted December 4, 2013 Posted December 4, 2013 Was pretty sure you'd be aware of some of the possible gotchas with the Revell kit - just posted for anyone watching that might be interested Iain
Guest Peterpools Posted December 5, 2013 Posted December 5, 2013 NIge A braver man than I! Stellar progress on the rework. Keep 'em coming Peter
LSP_Kevin Posted December 6, 2013 Posted December 6, 2013 Yes I am absolutely crazy!! Indeed, but in a good way! Kev
Silver Dollar Posted December 6, 2013 Posted December 6, 2013 That patient has more bandages on him than the Frankenstein monster. I dub thee "Sir Plastic Surgeon".

Silver Dollar Posted December 7, 2013 Posted December 7, 2013 It's alive, it's alive !!! Fortresstein, now that's funny. Hey, who's got the guts to build the Bride of Fortresstein? Dan Paxton 1
Sharkmouth Posted December 7, 2013 Posted December 7, 2013 (edited) Still in awe... crazy or brave (pick one or both) to cut up an expensive kit but you do know your limitations which obviously are further along than mine! Regards, Edited December 7, 2013 by sharkmotuh
Silver Dollar Posted December 7, 2013 Posted December 7, 2013 I think it looks pretty good. The changes are subtle but they're noticeable. I'm starting to see some of the problems with the accuracy more clearly now. It's definitely not in your imagination. Right now, I'm sitting in front of a Monogram B-17 box top and you can really tell how much the OOB HKM kit needs that liposuction. Yours looks sleeker and more in proportion like the pic on the box.
