Lancman Posted November 26, 2013 Posted November 26, 2013 Hi silver dollar not sure how it measures up but here's a couple of pics of my ID kit with a few measurements, don't how these compare Nige. 1 = 78mm, 2 = 45.5mm, 3. 82.5mm, 4. 71mm and 5. 30.5mm these are roughly done as my digital calipers battery is flat. doh!!!! Dan Paxton Posted November 27, 2013 Posted November 27, 2013 question for the fortress many.... are you all building and representing the narrow walkways of the period or the more recent wall to wall walkways for tourist to climb in and around? Know what I mean? Some boxes were wooden and are now metal (some ammo boxes) just a question and by no means is any answer right or wrong.......each artist has their own vision of the finished product...... V/R Dan
Silver Dollar Posted November 27, 2013 Posted November 27, 2013 I made mine like the original should be with one plywood plank in the waist and the narrow 6" catwalk in the bomb bay. Unfortunately, I don't remember which restored fortress is the most accurate. When I was at McGuire AFB about 30 years ago, Texas Raiders came in as part of Armed Forces Day. Since I was also a member of the Confederate Air Force at that time, I was allowed to be a "Crew Member" to take care of tourist questions. I was in full flight gear all the way down to the blue bunny, boots, helmet, O2 mask and A2 jacket. I remember trying to get to the waist from the cockpit and that was by no means an easy task with all that gear on. I hope that was an accurate resto because that's what I'm going by. Dan Paxton 1
Hubert Boillot Posted November 27, 2013 Posted November 27, 2013 Graham, I really think you should measure that model again. There's no way that fuselage is that far out!! It looks better to my eye than the OOB HK fuselage. I think a remember a side-by-side photo in Richard's (Richdic) building thread of his vac B-17, where the vac kit fuselage looked definitely fatter than the plastic kit, which itself seems to have taken the same extra load as I have ... So Graham's dimensions may be true, if not scale-accurate . Hubert.

Lancman Posted November 30, 2013 Posted November 30, 2013 Hi Nige, I re-measured the model with the callipers (with new battery) and they came out as follows nose=46.7mm, front of windscreen=78.2mm, behind wing root=82.9mm, behind waist guns=70.6mm and tail guns=32mm. So the ID vac is fatter than the HK kit also I am using the nose cone from the combat kit and it fits so I guess the combat kit is fat too. I can't slim her down as that's the size she needs to be so the transparencies fit. Graham

Silver Dollar Posted November 30, 2013 Posted November 30, 2013 I didn't know the tunnel entrance was off center. I've got to go back to my research. Everything is looking like it fits really well. Wow, that's a major windscreen difference. I assume you'll be remaking the clear windscreen part. What material will you use for that? I'm eager to see how you deal with it.
