No it does not mean you're crazy at all.  It means you took a huge risk cutting the body up and it came out well.  I don't know if I would have had the guts to do that much of a mod if I only had one kit.  You are what we call in the business a plastic surgeon.  At least when you cut up your patient, she doesn't scream or bleed.

I was going to ask you what the fuselage changes did to the fitting of your interior detail, but you have already beaten me to it mentioning tyne bulkheads.  When you said the fuselage was to bat and curved, I can see the engineers laying out the interior parts for the kit to scale using their mfg specs, etc, and by the time they got to the out side the share was to wide.  Then they tried to pull in the ends to make them accurate and you have the inflated fuselage.    I would almost think a vacuform fuselage of the correct shape might be the easiest solution, and an aftermarket opportunity for someone.  That way perhaps you could get the right shape and not have to mess with the interior too much???   Just a wild speculative guess.

Just a thought, if the fuselage is too wide what about the depth? Also whose drawings did you refer too? also the box top mentioned that this is a Boeing licenced product. What do Boeing think? I for one will try to do mine justice and with my limited skills it will be not a patch on the master pieces I have seen on this site so far, But I live in hope.

Please do not take this missive as a criticism but as an observation by an average modeller. I look in to learn and to maybe give me inspiration to improve my limited skills. So far I am well inspired, great work on yours and I look forward to watching yours mesomorph into a masterpiece.

Hey Tom.  You did an incredible job on those vacuform kits.  How does the accuracy compare to the HKM kit?  Do they give you enough to work with or do you have to put the details in yourself?  Thanks in advance.

The big vacs that I love are just a shell. All interior parts have to be scratch built. Great fun!

 

I couldn't tell you how accurate they are as I've never measured them. To me, if it looks ok then that's fine. I must say I have a lot of respect for projects such as Nigel's but it's not something I'd undertake. To my eye the HK kit is B-17 looking enough for me to build it as it is, and also after forking out £200 for it I'm simply not brave enough to take a saw to it!!

Thanks Tom for the quick reply.  I feel the same as you do.  IMHO, if the results looked like a cheap toy or if the kit looked more like a B-24, I'd be upset.  So far, when I look closely at this kit, I see a B-17.  You're right though.  At that price, I'd have a hard time surgerizing that fort.

Thanks for the info. I have made the Monogram 1/48 kit (twice, once when I was 18 using kit markings  and again about 12 years ago as Little Miss Chief When I was 43) I only have some Aerodata drawings which I have yet to scale up for comparison. I bought mine at Telford IPMS Nationals from Tiger Hobbies For what was probably the cheapest supplier by at least £10. I have yet to decide if I will use any after market decals or use the ones supplied. More research methinks is required before the Glue is used in anger. I hope to start it in the not too distant future Then take out a mortgage to build an extension to display it .

Maybe the solution is to Kit bash the HK and the Combat kits????     Nige…..I am getting impatient waiting for some more  pictures of the fix.

Don't want to rush, just one of those times to be that mouse in the corner.  I just want to see how it is going as the work progresses.  Usually when there is this much stuff to correct we are talking about a grumpy something, usually their latest jet.   I have been doing some Harrier research for future build with all the corrections necessary there, and this project has just captivated me as it is in the same vein.  It is especially so with so many of you guys building this beast right now, and I must say all of you are doing a very good job of it.   Now, back to impatiently waiting on pictures.  Everyone have a greater evening!!

I withdraw my former comment above ... Your surgery is as extensive as Iain's on the He-219. Just take even bigger b...s and a crazier mind   to go after these modifications like that on a kit of this price
