Low tack vinyl for making masks

I'm hoping to make vinyl masks, but not sure what kind of low tack vinyl to use for them. Anyone have any ideas/suggestions?

Try a sign shop supply house , ask for the low-tack paint mask. Or a sign shop may give/sell you a little.

I use this for the custom masks I make.

Yes!

 

Oramask 810 is perfect. It is like it was designed for masking scale models. If you search on the name you should have no problem finding a place that sells it. They only problem is that you will probably have to buy a fairly large quantity....I got mine in a roll that must weight 10 pounds...and cost about $75. A bit expensive, but it is unlikely you will ever need more in your modeling lifetime.

I went to a sign shop and asked for scrap clear/transparent/transluscent vinyl they use to cut vinyl die cuts. It should be cheap, mine was, otherwise:

anyone know where to get sheets of the yellow "kabuki" mask material that Eduard uses for theirs?

I been using wide (44 mm.) Tamiya Tape for masks. If the design is wider than 44mm. The tape is slightly overlapped to make the width needed.

I think Tamiya offers this material in sheets. It is essentially a paper mask. Try your local LHS.

You could also try signwriters application tape, there is a paper type & a plastic type, both are very good for masking (handcut), even for camouflage demarcation otherwise the signwriters Oramask film (blue) as stated above is the best for computer cut masks... I wouild be careful of using other signwriters vinyls for masks over paint as they have a relatively high-tac & also over 24-48hrs the adhesives will actually slightly cure making it harder to remove. Avery 800 film works well for canopy masks & can be left on for a long period without issues but do not use it over paint!
