viperfixer Posted September 29, 2012 Author Posted September 29, 2012 Did quite a lot already this weekend. Detailed, weathered and matt coated the wheel bays and right gun bay, left one will be closed. They are finished now, so it's time to glue the wings together.
airscale Posted September 29, 2012 Posted September 29, 2012 this is a really cool build - very nice job ..particularly like the IP and the 'pit.... Peter
SR10user Posted September 30, 2012 Posted September 30, 2012 Excellent! That paint chipping is amazing. How did you do it? It looks like it's....well.....chipped. LOL Dave
dodgem37 Posted September 30, 2012 Posted September 30, 2012 Nice distressing. I really like your worn paint/exposed aluminum effect. Very smooth. Sincerely, Mark
Guest Peterpools Posted September 30, 2012 Posted September 30, 2012 Nice work on the wheel well details. Looking good. Peter
viperfixer Posted September 30, 2012 Author Posted September 30, 2012 Alright, wings are glued together and attached to the fuselage. The fit was not perfect, but not terrible either. some putty and sanding will take care of that. Also installed the rudder and closed the ammo bay of the left wing. The panel was a bit deep so I glued some pieces of styrene in the bay with some thin tape for final adjustment. Now the fit is good. This is how things look: Don't know what I'll do next, putty and sanding or work on the engine or landing gear or something, we'll see about that next weekend! Wurzacher 1
viperfixer Posted September 30, 2012 Author Posted September 30, 2012 Excellent! That paint chipping is amazing. How did you do it? It looks like it's....well.....chipped. LOL Dave Thank you and everybody else for your nice comments! The chipping is very simple, just paint a base of aluminium and spray the primary color. Let that dry a bit and just chip it away with a knife or something. I also sanded it with very fine paper to smooth it out again. that's all.
viperfixer Posted October 6, 2012 Author Posted October 6, 2012 Bit of work done. Painted the engine cowl, first time I tried a bare metal finish with an airbrush. Built some bare metal planes in the past, but I was still using a paint brush then and it was nothing more then painting the plane silver, didn't look realistic at all. But I'm pretty happy with this result, at least for a first serious attempt. I managed to get some different shades in it and in a certain light it looks like metal to me. If the rest of the plane will turn out like this I would be happy with it. I'm sure there are some experts out here who know how to do it better, and I would really like to hear that! Also started with the wheels and tires and continued getting rid off seams, not my favorite job. Hopefully the rest of the plane will be ready for paint soon. It's hard to photograph, but this was the best I could make of it. There's a little cat hair on there, I know Tomorrow I'll be painting the front of the cowl and the wheel disks red, and we'll see what else.
Guest Peterpools Posted October 6, 2012 Posted October 6, 2012 Awesome progress on the Jug. She is really starting to come together and look the Brute is is. Keep 'em coming Peter
viperfixer Posted October 8, 2012 Author Posted October 8, 2012 Little update from yesterday. Painted the cowl and wheel hubs. Tried acrylic paint first but again I had problems with that. Don't really like this paint yet, sometimes it works but it gives problems pretty often. It's really precise with thinning and pressure I think, still have to figure it out. Found a old bottle of Humbrol, that worked much better, although it came on a little bit to thick to my taste. Also broke an O-ring of my 0.20 airbrush muzzle so I had to use the 0.40 one, that's why I think. Not really uneventful yesterday! Luckily I also had some Alclad to spray for the landing gear legs, that always works great, straight out of the bottle. Did some damage to the paint after that. Still have to improve that I think. Maybe I'll use Tamiya polisher on it to smooth it out, it looks too scratchy instead of worn now. Paint is very shinny, but after a matt coat it should look better. In reality it also looks a bit more red and a bit darker. Landing gear still needs a break line, and the tires need to be weathered more. Still more work to do on the rest of the plane to get it ready for primer, that's next.
viperfixer Posted October 9, 2012 Author Posted October 9, 2012 Ok, home for an evening, so I tried polishing the red paint a bit. It looks a bit better now I think. Also managed to catch the real look of the red a little better with less light, although it's actually still even darker. Don't know if the scratching is too much, but It is a battlefield plane so maybe the ground crew wasn't to careful when taking panels off and just lay them on the ground or something. Or when it would wear down they didn't have paint available to touch it up. Does this sound like I'm trying to talk it right for myself? Well, maybe I am! Have to remember that I'm still practicing, and I already learned a lot from this built. Think I will leave it like this and see how it looks after a wash and final coating.
LSP_Kevin Posted October 9, 2012 Posted October 9, 2012 I think it looks pretty good mate. Maybe a touch overdone, but I see no harm in that. As long as you're happy with it, that's all that matters. Kev
