painting checkerboard pattern

topic says it all. does anyone have the 1994 Finescale issue of Modelling the Second World War? i am looking for the article that explains how to paint checkerbord pattern on cowlings. if so, would they be so kind as to email me this article. yeah i know it would be much easier to purchase the decal(s) for this pattern....but i like to do it the hard way

The FineScale article showed how to do the layout on a cowl for a checkerboard pattern. The author painted the cowl white first and then marked off the checked pattern in pencil. He described a method of getting even measurements for the check, both front to back and around the cowl. If you have twelve checked columns arounf the cowl, you can wral a strip of paper around the cowl and then divide the strip into twelve even divisions. Then you can use the strip to point tick marks around the cowl to get the twelve columns. you do the same for each row front to back. You also use the paper strip method to mark out the rows, front to back.

 

As I recall, the author inked in each black check by hand with a Rapidograph pen. It looked very effective.

Pretty sure I have the article. Modeller was Bob Steinbrumm and he did the job on an old Monogram P-47 kit. Send me an email if you still need info regarding it.
