In Mckinstrys' book on the Lancaster he quotes interview with a mechanic. At the end of each mission he banged each exhaust stack with a tuning fork and each cracked one was replaced. On a Berlin mission it was not unusual to have to replace many stacks so the whole 6 stack pile would all be variably rusty or new. This might apply to a long range Mossie or P38 for example, but not for a short mission build such as a Tiger Moth.
