Eli Raphael Posted January 6, 2010 Posted January 6, 2010 Hello, Can someone tell me names of distinguished RAF flyers during this air battle? I have Tuck and Bader. Need more for good decal set. Thanks for the help.
LSP Dan Posted January 6, 2010 Posted January 6, 2010 "Cobber" Kain. I believe he flew a ragwing Hurricane. First to receive DFC. A New Zealand native. Sorry, he was in the Battle of France.
Kagemusha Posted January 6, 2010 Posted January 6, 2010 These might help: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Few & scroll down for colour plates: http://books.google.com/books?vid=1855325977
pappy1 Posted January 7, 2010 Posted January 7, 2010 Yes Eli One of the most overlooked and the highest scouring of the B of B pilots was "Ginger" Lacey (James Henry Lacey) And also Peter Townsend, and Paddie Finnucane.......Pappy1
jozef Posted January 7, 2010 Posted January 7, 2010 Hi Eli I think the one of the most scouring pilots was Josef Frantisek, the Czech who flew with the 303 (Polish) squadron (died later in a crash during landing). If you need reference I can tzry to scan some pictures from the books. Best Jozef
dennismcc Posted January 7, 2010 Posted January 7, 2010 Peter Townsend, J.B Nicolson (only fighter Command VC), Ray Holmes who rammed a German bomber in his Hurricane, probably lots more out there but these are the ones that stand out in my failing memory. Cheers Den
Eli Raphael Posted January 7, 2010 Author Posted January 7, 2010 Thanks to all! Yes, Jozef, please send info to: zotz17@yahoo.com Thanks

Slim Posted January 13, 2010 Posted January 13, 2010 Eli, I know this topic is older, but I hope it's not a dead issue... I would like to see you produce markings from some of the Hurricanes flown by the 3 Eagle Squadrons shortly after the BoB. In particular, P/O Bill Dunn of No. 71 Squadron, Red Tobin, or Don Gentile. My current project is a Hurricane flown by P/O Dunn and I've had to do quite a bit of kit bashing and custom paint mask ordering to get the required markings. I was a little supprised to find that 3 Eagle Squadrons have been overlooked by the aftermarket decal makers. It seems this would be a popular subject since the Americans of the Eagle Squadrons flew both Hurricanes and Spitfires before being absorbed into the USAAF.
Sabre F-86 Posted January 13, 2010 Posted January 13, 2010 Would you be doing a set in 24th as well? If so I'm interested if Bader and Frantisek are in there. I'd love to do my Airfix and Trumpeter Hurricanes in those two sets of markings. Sabre

I'm not to sure the eagle squadrons flew the early fabric covered wing hurricane. I know that Red Tobin tried to join up in France, but wasn't able to before France fell,so he escaped over the channel to England and joined up there.By this time I think most of the fabric wingers had been phased out.....Pappy1

Tobin did land in France but was too late for events there and did finally get his training in England. Also, I've yet to see a photo or reference of any of the Eagle Squadrons flying the rag-wing Cane'. They didn't fly the aircraft for long before making the transition to the Spitfire. For the most part, the Hurricanes flown by the Eagle Squadrons were later production Mk Is and a couple of versions of the Mk II. I was hoping Eli might expand his offerings beyond BoB Hurricanes to the late 1940 - mid 1941 time frame
