alaninaustria
Here is a new kit that I started a while back that I need to get finished! Build details: Kit: 1/32 Hasegawa P-40E. Paints used: Gunze and Tamiya Aqueous thinned with isopropanol (ISP) alcohol. Metal parts were painted with Alclad II (various metal shades). Primer: Mr. Surfacer 500 and 1200 (rattle can). Clear coat: Tamiya flat mixed with Future (floor polish). Masks: Montex Masks. Washes: Oils mixed with spirits and dish soap. Other details: Seatbelts: RB Productions US seatbelts (1/32): (www.radubstore.com). Cockpit placards: Mike Grant decals: (www.mikegrantdecals.com). Propeller markings: Hobby Decal dry transfers: (www.hobbydecal.com). Sanding sponges: Mastercasters: (www.mastercasters.co.uk). I made a new instrument panel and started with the cockpit... the cockpit instruments were punched out from the kit provided decals using my Waldron punch. alaninaustria
I like the cockpit that Hasegawa used, but I prefer to use the Mike Grant decals and use a drop of future to simulate the glass faces... The Mike Grant decals (www.mikegrantdecals.com) also have some cool placards... and of course the Radu Brinzan US seatbelts (www.radubstore.com)... Radu's seatbelts really make the cockpit come alive.... if you haven't tried them you better! Model_Monkey

alaninaustria
Next up was the prop... I used the dry transfers from hobby decal (P-47 ones) to get the serials right... and a little dry brushing and silver paint chipping... I like to avoid decals on the outside of the build if at all possible.... I hate having to deal with the carrier film edges... Silver chipping is with a small piece of sponge and a silver marker... blot on some silver then practice on some scrap paper until it looks right and then have a go at the model... The rivets are made using the MDC riveter.... makes nice realistic rivets and fasteners Model_Monkey
alaninaustria
Next up was the wing construction... I found this kit to go together rather nicely... I weathered the wheel bays up with a small sponge to get random chipping and some wear and tear happening I am assuming that the lend lease birds still had zinc chromate primer Model_Monkey
alaninaustria
I then moved onto the cockpit instalation and found the fit to be rather snug, but nice. The modular fit of this kit increases the work load... but with patience it is possible to get a nice finish! I am using Gunze Aqueous paints thinned with alcohol Model_Monkey
alaninaustria
Another angle... the kit seat just needed a little thinning around the edges... and is actually a nice stock kit part.... again, those Radu seatbelts make all the difference! rafju and Model_Monkey
alaninaustria
I then glued the fuselage all up and shot on some Mr. Sfcr 500... I first glued the rear tail parts together and then the whole part was glued to the forward fuselage.... a little sanding and presto... a nice P-40 fuselage! That primer is really the secret to a good surface... Model_Monkey
alaninaustria
Another view... this time from underneath... I seperated the rear elevator and rudder... I wanted to pose the elevator with a slight drop, I find this to be a classic position of the control surfaces... Model_Monkey
alaninaustria
Some preshading of the panel lines... Model_Monkey
alaninaustria
Another angle... there sure are alot of lines that need to be shaded Model_Monkey
alaninaustria
Next step, I mixed some azure blue up and shot the bottom of this desert fighter... if I am not mistaken the British used this color predominately on their birds in the MTO... Hans
Hi Alan, Your build is coming together nicely. Does Hobbydecal make drytransfers for the P-40? Cheers, Hans
alaninaustria
Then I moved on to the top camo... classic British desert camo colors... Thanks Hans, no... I used some from the P-47 sheet!! Model_Monkey
alaninaustria
The trick to a good finish is to polish down the paint after each coat... the Mastercaster sanding sponges (www.mastercasters.co.uk) do a good job of this...
