Revell 1/32 F4F-4 for Butch O'Hare's F4F-3

I've been wanting to convert my old Revell kit to represent an F4F-3 variant since I got Trumpeter's F4F-4 kit. I'll make it a fixed wing -3 with 4 machine guns in the colors of Butch O'Hare's mount in 1942. I'll do it up as a wheels-up in-flight desk top model.

Great idea and a great man, O Hare is an icon :unsure: . I will really like to see the wings evolve on this project. Great idea....Pappy1

Finally getting to this build.

 

The 3 concerns I had about converting the Revell kit from a folding wing F4F-4 to Butch O'Hare's fixed wing F4F-3 was the engine, cowling and wing rivet pattern.

 

I know F4F-3's had engine variations of some with magnetos on the crank case and some not. Some had two large cowling flaps some had 8 small ones. Some had an airscoope at the 12 o'clock position some did not. I found out for O'Hare's 'White 15', it had no scoop on top of the cowl (so I'll need to fill and sand the kit's cowl) and the enging did have crankcase magnetos (which the kit does, too). A picture of O'Hare flying a -3 marked 'F-13' and dated April, 1942 had no cowl scoop and the 8 cowl flaps -close enough for me and my ' White 15'.

The -3 had 4 guns as opposed to the -4's 6. The original positions of the -3's four guns are virtually the same postion as in the -4, the access pannels are completely different, as is the rivet pattern in general between the two marks. I'm still not sure how I'm going to deal with that.

 

I'm starting by dressing the engine up a bit and hope to have some images by the evenging of the 18th (a day off for me.)
