Good Duck
I'm going over the Tamiya A6M5 instructions and something got me thinking ~ What Give? This is not my first Zero, but I never thought about it before. Why is the Zero have only one shoulder harness? Is that same for all Japanese aircrafts? So, how it work? can anyone show me pictures of how the haness goes on the pilot? Thanks. Allen

Spaced Marine
Some Japanese bombers didn't even have lap belts according to the Monogram cockpit book! I think the Zero pilots were lucky in regards to seat restraints in that regard.
jbrundt
Some Japanese aircraft from the period have no shoulder harness whatsoever. Nor parachutes. Japanese pilots would often forego chutes to save weight and take more fuel. Jeff
DaveJ
Some Japanese aircraft from the period have no shoulder harness whatsoever. The Frank I'm currently working on would be one such example. Lap belts only, and certainly no airbags or ABS.
Mr Creosote
My understanding is that *most* of the time you would only find the single shoulder strap on IJN aircraft operating from carriers. Land based fighter aircraft would have lap belts. The shoulder harness crossed the pilot's chest diagonally. This isn't as strange as you might think,it seems like there were plenty of US fighter aircraft at the start of the war that used lap belts only. And another IJN fun tidbit: they apparently dumped their hooks after trapping. RD
