TimW Posted November 4, 2010 Posted November 4, 2010 Looking excellent! I have the Hase P-40M that comes with Fisken's markings...but it's OD over neutral gray and not as colorful as your scheme! http://www.hlj.com/product/HSG08199 Great work! Tim W.
Allok Posted November 4, 2010 Author Posted November 4, 2010 Thanks fellas. Looking excellent! I have the Hase P-40M that comes with Fisken's markings...but it's OD over neutral gray and not as colorful as your scheme! http://www.hlj.com/product/HSG08199 Great work! Tim W. I have this kit also and am using the painting instructions and decals as a guide for the stripes. I will probably do an OD P-40 at some point in the future but for now, I just need to get this one done. Here is a picture of the plane I'm doing (K-15 at the left of the shot) warming up in front of Geoff Fiskins M-5 (extreme right): (This photo is taken from the Hobbyvista site and is subject to copyright)
LDSmodeller Posted November 4, 2010 Posted November 4, 2010 Hi Keith! nice bird...! I've one question regarding the Sutton harness. I saw you put the main belts with one fixture point behind the seat. However, as the back belts have two attachment points, I thought one was indeed fixed to the seat rear as you did but the other one was secured in the center hole of the seat reinforcement plate located in the seat. Am I wrong? Were there various ways to fix the harness in the Warhawk? An important note here, is that the Sutton harness fitted to the the "M" varient could well have been just the shoulder and lap harness, without the strap going down the back. The Suttons were fitted upon arrival in New Zealand by the SU's (Servicing Units) and I have a feeling they were the same/similar fitted to the P 40E in April/May 1942. Tim Yes the "M" version in US Equivalents of RAF Day fighter scheme camouflage is one of the nicer ones. Only the first intial batch of 'M" model wore it, the rest were OD/Grey. When th P 40's were repaced by the Vought F4U's in 1944, the P 40's were flown back to New Zealand and the browns were over painted with (NZ) Blue Sea Grey (sometimes referred to as Ocean/Pacific Blue) that also looked quite nice, but the P 40 never wore it in combat Check out this link to a P40 at the RNZAF Museum under restoration in those colors http://www.airforcemuseum.co.nz/index.cfm/imageeffect/effect/popup/medium/screen/libraryimageid/612/lang/en_nz/ Regards Alan
Allok Posted November 5, 2010 Author Posted November 5, 2010 Some spots to go with the stripes. I really like the RooDecals. Good colour, opacity and reasonably robust. Seeing as how they are probably 20+ years old, I've had to use a considerable amount of Sol to get them to stick.
Allok Posted November 13, 2010 Author Posted November 13, 2010 Turns out, the ID stripe on the cowl is in the wrong place (Cheers Hasegawa) So I painted it out, remasked... and painted them in the right place. Incidentally, if your are doing RNZAF P-40 "Gloria Lyons", the Hasegawa painting and decal guide is correct.
Anthony in NZ Posted November 14, 2010 Posted November 14, 2010 Wow Keith, that is beautiful. I have the Fisken issue and was going to do that scheme, or possibly "Gloria Lyons" but after seeing this..........oooh I may have to go with this scheme. Very inspiring indeed. Cant wait to see this one in person soon! Cheers Anthony
Allok Posted November 21, 2010 Author Posted November 21, 2010 Wow Keith, that is beautiful. Can't wait to see this one in person soon! Cheers Anthony Thanks Anthony but this one is no oil painting. A little minor progress... I've managed to complete the decalling and start attaching all the fiddly bits. The 9 on the nose used to be an 8. The great thing about decals is their flexibility. Serials are from Ventura and I used the the kit data stencils. I had a note from Brad Hagen (AKA P-40) that there should also be placards on the fronts of the oleos, so I'm going to paint those: I used a PE Gunsight from Toms Modelworks and painted the Mastercasters Fishtail exhausts grey (for now) I bet Charles Metz has a laugh when he sees the wheels. It's on my to-do list charlie... really!
LDSmodeller Posted November 21, 2010 Posted November 21, 2010 Keith; you have done really well!! Quite captured the look. Don't know if you have plans to weather your model?? If not doesn't matter, looks really good the way it is Regards Alan
Allok Posted November 21, 2010 Author Posted November 21, 2010 Don't know if you have plans to weather your model?? If not doesn't matter, looks really good the way it is Regards Alan Thanks Alan. Definitely going the weather it- mostly just fading as I don't see a lot of chipping in the photo I'm working from (nor any other Pacific RNZAF plane I've seen). I'll also be doing a bit of dusting, exhaust staining and oil seepage... but not too much. I'm going to try to give it a rinse first before the paint fade. Then I'll flat coat the whole thing before adding the other weathering. Should look OK in the end.
LSP_Kevin Posted November 21, 2010 Posted November 21, 2010 Very nice work Keith. P-40s just look great in this scheme, and you're really doing it justice here. Kev
dodgem37 Posted November 21, 2010 Posted November 21, 2010 Kieth, Great job on a wonderfully dynamic scheme. Sincerely, Mark
Allok Posted November 23, 2010 Author Posted November 23, 2010 I've begun the laborious weathering process, starting with some good old Gunze clear flat. I am really resisting the urge to heavily paint chip this plane as it is crying out for some serious scratching but the servicing units kept them in remarkable shape so I've tried to keep it subtle. However, nothing can hide from the sun in the Pacific so "paint fade" is the order of the day. Oil, dust and soot are next.
big matt Posted November 23, 2010 Posted November 23, 2010 What a great paint job. She really looks sharp.
