bobba
Hi Peter, This is looking stunning. I have one of these sitting in my stash that I want to build as an NF3, so I'll be watching carefully for tips. My biggest problem for this build is lack of references, whst are you using? mgbooyv8
Thanks for the kind comments guys! Bob, I agree, references on the Venom family are sparse. As references, I use mainly several walk arounds of Sea Venoms on the internet and a very useful walkaround on the French Aquilon with good pictures of the flap and undercarriage areas: http://aviapassionmaquette.free.fr/Aviapas...%20aquilon.html This link was sent to me by a friend of mine. Also the cutaway drawing in Air International of August 1990 is very useful. I don't have the Warpaint on the Venom family or the book on all twin tail designs of De Havilland. I think you'll have most trouble determining what seats were in a NF3. My guess is it had no bang seats but the same type as fitted in the Meteor night fighters. Otherwise, no one would want to fly in the Meteors anymore! Maybe someone can shine a light on this? Cheers, Peter
mgbooyv8
Hi guys, Not much progress on the Sea Venom the last few weeks. Here's what's been done so far. Sawing the engine cover in two (restored original length with plastic strip) and opening up the two vents. Rubbing down area's requiring attention after the grey paint: Add some detail on the coaming behind the bang seats: The next picture shows the cockpit framing in place to show the idea: Now it's time to add some paint aind fair in the cockpit on the fuselage. The fit is not too bad, but pictures show the cockpit framing was filled smoothly on the original. The plain rear wall of the cockpit will be hidden by the seats. bcauchi
That is one awesome build man, it is really great, beautiful detailing and I am really glad you chose that model. We don;t see those often and that makes it all the more interesting. Well done really nice work.
mgbooyv8
Thanks for the kind comments, guys! Rigor, the color scheme will be Royal Navy with Suez Crisis stripes and red fins (as the one in the fleet air arm museum) I think the Sea Venom looks very good in those yellow and black stripes. As this scheme doesn't come with the kit, some squadron badges will have to be made with the computer. Cheers, Peter

mgbooyv8
Hi guys, After the canopy was fitted and filled in place, the separate hood was temporarily fixed with Maskol. All glazing was masked with Maskol as well. On this canopy that's easier than masking tape. Now, some paint was thrown on the old girl. First the black interior colour on the canopy, I used Revell #9 Anthrazit for that. It was directly followed with the yellow of the Suez stripes (Humbrol 154). The tiptanks also received their first coat of white. After a week, the yellow was rubbed down with worn sandpaper and masked. The black stripes were added with Humbrol 85 Coal Black: I never use "regular black" on my models After another week - I spray my models at daylight in the weekends - the black stripes were masked and the red (humbrol 60) was added on the twin tails:
mgbooyv8
That was yesterday. This morning, I sprayed the Sky undersurface (Humbrol 90): Next week some entertaining hours of masking is waiting for me for the top coat of Extra Dark Sea Gray (WEM ACRN02). LSP_Kevin
This is going to look really good when it's finished Peter. Having recently acquired this kit myself, I really appreciate the work you're doing here. Kev

mgbooyv8
Thanks guys! Well, the Extra Dark Sea Gray went on fine: Now the thrilling bit. Will the tape come off okay, without lifting any paint?? To my relief, it did! And at the bottom as well: Phew, I'm very happy with the results. After hardening of the paint, a light rub down will follow with worn sandpaper. Then, the black nose and the Sky rectangles behind the serial numbers and the "Royal Navy" signs will be applied, prior to a coat of Johnson's Clear. Stay tuned!
