ChrisS Posted March 27, 2007 Posted March 27, 2007 I was originally going to feature this in a dio...but this seems like a better excuse to build it. Note the price tag
Hacker Posted March 27, 2007 Posted March 27, 2007 Been trying to get me one of those plus the float version. They crop up on evil bay once in awhile but yet to get one hacker
Guest canuck63 Posted April 6, 2007 Posted April 6, 2007 Hi Chris, it would be a gas to see it modeled in its "Kamikaze" guise....with a 200lts drum full with acetone, alcool or dirty gasoline....ready to take off against the USNavy.....a few Willows ever managed to take off, while a lone bird, with a 200lts barrel full of sake made it to a US cruiser....it was duly bagged by the AA gunners and all that was left of it was a floating empty sake barrel with a loooong straw sticking out of it! Cheers Manu
ChrisS Posted April 30, 2007 Author Posted April 30, 2007 A little progress to show. Main parts painted awaiting hinomarus and markings (will be masked and painted) Got the engine done, OOB, nothing added here. And finally a detail of the fuselage, tamiya and polyscale acrylics for the orange and green, and the metal is testors "steel" buffing metalizer from the rattlecan buffed with an old t-shirt. I gotta get this little guy off the bench quick as the Hase Tbolt should be showing up this week!
ChrisS Posted May 12, 2007 Author Posted May 12, 2007 She's done. Not too sure how excited I am about rigging a bipe (this is my first), but I had a good time and my shelves needed something different. Thanks for looking~
alaninaustria Posted May 12, 2007 Posted May 12, 2007 Hej Chris..... I guess I should be looking in here a little more often! This is great work... and an interesting subject not seen too often... I like her! Cheers Alan
Gene Posted May 12, 2007 Posted May 12, 2007 Looks great Chris! Often wondered how that scheme would look in 360 x360 - really nice job. And thanks Canuck63 for that bit of history how this was used - makes it a more viable target for the last 'ace-in-a-day' than I had previously thought.
Dave Pratt Posted May 12, 2007 Posted May 12, 2007 Chris I'm diggin' this one big-time and a great job on the old girl. How did you like the fit of the upper wing or rather did you come across any problems with it?Further did your version come with flaots and if so would you think of trading/selling them?I have a land based version as well but wanted to do it as a float version.Very cool build ...cheers
ChrisS Posted May 12, 2007 Author Posted May 12, 2007 Thanks guys. The fit is pretty good overall, getting the top wing to mate with the fuselage was the hardest part, and isn't easy. A little planning and patience will win the day though, it has the potential to be one of those steps that if you rush it, the plane could be trash bin fodder pretty quickly I did not get floats with this kit, otherwise I'd be happy to send em your way Dave, sorry. The scheme is a bit artistic liberty as I "mixed" a few schemes I'd seen over a range of Willows. I custom mixed the orange and the green is IJN green. The hinomarus were a combo of decals and hand cut masks using Tamiya red. One thing to look out for is that all of the "fabric" parts have a well-stated texture on them, and if you're not carefull you could end up with a LOT of decal silvering. I used future exclusivly for the decals and it helped fill all that texture under the cals. Then a few clear coats helped even the surface a bit. The kit comes with rigging wire which I used for all the wings, and then I ran out. So I used EZLine for the landing gear rigging. The kit is well engineered and if you follow the instructions it'll go quite smoothly. Again, thanks for looking.
