What would you pay for a 1/32 Tamiya P-38?

Assuming it would be comparable to their 1:32 Mossie in size, scope, and detail, then about the same price would seem reasonable to me. The Tamiya Mossie seems to be averaging about 200 USD, so somwehere in that range? Maybe a bit more? Compared to the forthcoming P-51B/Cs, I would pay more for the P-38, partly due to the size and complexity, and partly due to my love for that aircraft. There is no bigger P-38 freak than me, trust me, but even I have a limit, and I expect that's about 250 bucks for me. 

 

It's all about what you love as a modeler. I love P-38s more than P-51s, so I would sell my stash to afford new P-38 kits.

I am speaking of comparing a possible kotare 1/32 to the existing Tamiya 1/48, I perceive the primary difference would be scale and I do not think Kotare would present a kit that offers more than the 1/48 kit other than being 1/32.  That is the paradox of a simple 1/32 p-38 for me.  A simple one has already been perfected in 1/48 and a complex one to me is not especially desirable but I respect that many on this board prefer only 1/32.

I'd pay $250 or thereabouts for a Tamiya 1/32 P-38J so long as it has options in the box to build other variants of the P-38J besides what the current 1/48 Tamiya kit offers (which is P-38J-10 to J-20 I think).  Their P-51D (initial release) contained the parts for three different blocks so I see no need to buck the trend here.  I want those dive brakes, hydraulic ailerons and leading edge landing light that came into existence with the P-38J-25 (shooting from the hip on most of the characteristics of the J-25 and probably missed a few).  For that matter, give us options for the P-38L while you're at it.  Oh, and that $250 includes engines, nose guns, etc.  If they don't go that route, all the better but my price goes down to around $200 +/- $20.

For me it just depends on who's producing it and build options that are or not including in the kit (i.e. decals, P.E., resin. 3D prints). Since the P-38 is a favorite of mine $200-$250. Just depends really for me.

I can't help but think that Tamiya et al is pricing itself out of reach for many when it comes to LSPs. I mean, with tariffs on top of ever increasing prices on newly arriving kits, it seems like our hobby is becoming ever more cost prohibitive. Just my 2 cents...

I'd love to see any WW2 aircraft from Tamiya...and a P38 would be at the top, but I feel like they could do awesome things with Pacific War aircraft.  There are so many Japanese military subjects alone that could be done by them.

 

I build a lot of armor models.  I cut my teeth on their 1/35 line 45 years ago and still do to this day.  Their way of doing things in armor is just right...perfectly engineered but not over done on miniscule detail that won't be seen.  They are very build friendly and gives the super detailer a canvas to go nuts.

 

Hopefully one day they'll jump back in the 32nd scale game. They don't need to compete with other companies, they just need to do their thing and we will buy.

Ha, this is funny; I put this on the wish list thread.  I selected Tamiya, making a F-model "Yamamoto Special Edition" sort of tongue in cheek, but yeah why not.  

Looking at their 1/48 offerings, I'd be happy if they just scaled those up, but yeah having a few more options would be cool.  Of course this drives the price up, but I'd pay for the ability to build additional models.  F,G,H,J, and L in one kit would be nice.  I'd buy at least two.

This is NOT to say, if Kotare wanted to take swing, I'd buy Tamiya instead.  On the contrary, Kotare would be my first choice.  

Having been working on the Kotare Mk Vb, and the Tamiya Mk IXc, with LFD noses, I find I prefer the fewer parts count of the Kotare kits.

Agree 1000%...if only they upscaled a quarter of their 1/48 scale range it would make a lot of LSP folks very very happy

Given that Tamiya appear to have abandoned 1/32 kit's, I'd say that a new P-38 from them would be highly improbable and likely expensive.  I'd rather they did a Beaufighter.

 

But there's lots of single engine WW2 and post war stuff they could do instead.  A P-40 is the first one that comes to mind, followed by a Wildcat and a P-47 then any of the Japanese fighters that aren't a Zero.  Wouldn't mind a Me-109B, C or D either.

 

I'm very glad that you can still get their Spitfires, Mustangs and Corsairs etc, but the absence of anything new from them hasn't been a problem for me.  I'd almost certainly buy it if they did a new kit, but they haven't so I no longer care.  There's plenty of other companies doing equally good LSP's now, so yeah. $3.50 sounds about right to me.

Amazing isn't it, how the wonder kits of yesteryear, staggering pieces technical achievement in their day, are now seen as not worthy of attention, EVEN, and this is the weird bit, when they still have no direct competitors subject-wise!

 

Tamiya seriously missed the boat with the Griffon Spits, though....

I do not need or want a P-38.  I was very surprised that Tamiya did not produce any of the Griffon variants.  One can only live life at the time with all fingers crossed for only so long.  Kotare please carry on with this.

Agree, two whole engines and segmented tyres raised the Mosquito parts count unnecessarily.

 

A new tool Tomcat and Phantom B with a moderate parts count would be stunning. Their big Kitty and Phantom have a combined age of 77 years, and seeing how Tamiya got the complex shapes just right on their recent 1:48 offerings makes me pine for the same in 1:32.

 

The weird thing is that Tamiya might move to 1:35 scale, in line with the armour scale they invented. They are almost certainly watching Border, but whether they'll act is another thing. So, how much would you pay for a 1:35 Lockheed Lightning I ?

I would pay the same price, it does not matter to me if Tamiya issues in 1/32 or 1/35.  But for big subjects I prefer 1/48 planes anyway.  For single engine WWII I prefer 1/32.

Honestly, I wouldn’t care who does one as long it is an improvement over what we are currently shackled with. 
I have one sitting on the shelf of death for the last several years waiting for me to get the energy to finish. 
This aircraft deserves better.
