nmayhew Posted June 18 Posted June 18 to those in the US, I would just say 'patience' i would also like to highlight Thierry's comment some pages back that noted US modellers have had it great for the past couple of decades compared to many Euro modellers - and certainly UK modellers (even before Brexit) - because their international purchases escaped duties / other charges; I'm not saying this is your comeuppance, just asking for a small intake of breath and a sense of perspective it's a bit like the Kotare new releases... yeah you can pay retail on release, or wait a bit and get them significantly cheaper i mean be honest, how many on here actually churn a kit out inside a couple of months anyway? i realise that doesn't make the P-51 appear any quicker on your desks, but just chill - it will get to you and no doubt at a reasonable price mattlow, Kagemusha, Christa and 3 others 6

Certainly not us builders, of that I'm reasonable sure. You can call it "moaning" or anything else you want. It's just a typical marketing ploy, make a product exclusive, helps sales. It also answers my question about who was in control of the distribution of their product. So what marketing ploy is this with the new -51B/C? I'm asking because I truly don't know. I can also understand Eduard helping out the folks in Europe I get that too.

All I want, along with anyone else who questions the price is an explanation of WHY. "Just because" isn't an answer, used to get that noise from my kids when they were young. Christa 1

I think it's from a purely commercial perspective, I don't think Eduard are favouring Europeans, it's just easier and cheaper to sell on your doorstep, when Wingnut Wings started out, easy to buy in New Zealand, also the US, free shipping, no additional costs, in the UK it was a nightmare, import charges were required, charges were added on to process those additional charges - Kafka's laughing somewhere - you had to visit the depot to pay and collect, there was no online option at the time, took a few days for the kit to travel halfway round the planet, and the internal process could take upto ten days, or longer. I guess I'm being dense here[ been told that more than a few times]. It's the "purely commercial perspective " that I'm not getting. I don't fault Eduard for favouring the European market . Heaven knows the builders there have been taking on the chin for a long time and they shouldn't have been. I do remember Wingnut Wings being pretty easy to get here.
Johnny Cloud Posted June 18 Posted June 18 Maybe you guys can help me figure this out: have there been other kits with drastically different MSRP's, according to region, before? Not taxes or shipping fees, just the suggested retail price. I don't think so but I honestly don't know. CRAZY IVAN5, D.B. Andrus and Christa 3
thierry laurent Posted June 18 Posted June 18 Too true Andy! Proportionally far less Wingnuts kits were sold in Europe than what would have occured if the prices were the same than in the rest of the world. Paying close to the double of the retail price of models produced overseas is something we have unfortunately been used too often since we started modelling! The ironic part is the fact close to all the aftermarket sets for Wingnuts kits were released...in Europe! Frankly I was happy and possibly a little bit jealous when I saw what our American friends could obtain! Now it looks we are in the same boat but alas this is not a cruise ship... The world is again changing and this even impacts our hobby! Last, personally, I stopped trying to understand the commercial policy of some companies years ago and clearly Eduard is one of them! DugyB Posted June 19 Posted June 19 Pretty sure here in Norge I pay 25% VAT on top of the cost, so anything arriving here gets jacked up well in price …. I’m still not sure on this kit … glad I’m on a sturdy fence.🫡

Hasegawa was particularly marked up in the US vs home market. Newer mold 190s were $25-30 in yen but double that for US msrp. The 9800Y on the side of my first issue p-51 works out to about 60 bucks now, but was closer to $80 with the exchange when they came out. And that's full retail. Every Japanese manufacturer was similar. When I was going to Okinawa a couple times a year, I used to carry empty suitcases to bring kits back. It's more than the actual government charges. It's also logistics, having staff or hiring external companies in to deal with export paperwork etc. Everything that takes time, effort, knowledge, etc costs money thierry laurent, Johnny Cloud, Christa and 1 other 4
