Wingnut Wings Fokker D.VII (Fok) 'Early' - Finished!

Not a huge update..

Painted up the tail surfaces with SMS Chrome Yellow - which is very yellow!
 

Then painted on the black stripes
 

The white was then painted on the rudder, and I cut some masks for the cross
 

While masking I also masked up the tread plate areas on the wing and sprayed them with Tamiya XF-76
 

In preparation for gluing the lower wings on
 

 

Then the lower wing cover plate was glued
 

I re-glued the rigging for the tail (which I attached early on but removed when adding the streak decals) in order to glue the tail surfaces on. Adding the rigging and gluing it inside the fuselage is waaaaaaay easier than adding the rigging after the tail is glued on!
 

 

Then the tail and all the tail control surfaces could be glued on. Hopefully I dont break these 437 times whilst weathering the model
 

Its certainly a colourful thing!

Aviattic supply lovely linen wheel decals - these were carefully cut out and applied over MRP bleached clear doped linen. The tyres were painted with a mix of tan and grey for un-dyed rubber, no black rubber apparently.
 

 

The outer hub was then glued into the wheel
 

ASK turnbuckles were used on the lower axle wing, figured I needed to add these early, which will make rigging it all up later a touch easier..
 

The mounting location in the axle wing was drilled out with a 0.6mm bit
 

And the turnbuckle and mounting loop glued in.
 

 

The turnbuckles themselves aren't glued, so they remain mobile which will help then align with the rigging
 

Next up the exhaust was glued in/on. This was painted up with various metal/burned metal shades from MRP, then dirtied up with MRP Engine Soot
 

Whilst working up this end of the airframe, I masked and painted the radiator, with Tamiya LP-11
 

Of course I forgot to take a photo of the freshly painted rad..

JUmping all over the place - I needed to drill a hole in the fuselage side for a flare gun - out with a 1mm drill bit and away we go
 

Photos of this aircraft show the hole for the flare gun was repaired or reinforced, so I painted that patch in, first with dark green
 

Then with some thinned down AK Grimy Grey
 

I wanted to replicate the brown glaze often applied over the top of lozenge camo to tone it down - tamiya brown panel line wash is kinda perfect for this
 

It was applied VERY liberally, then allowed to dry off a little
 

The brown stain was then scrubbed off with some kitchen paper very slightly dampened with Tamiya enamel thinner
 

You can see the effects of scrubbing here
 

Doing it this way imparts a really nice patchy look thats non uniform whilst also giving the whole thing a nice brown tint
 

Here's the full effect now it's dry. Very pleased with how its come out, patchy but intentionally so
 

Unfortunately the lower engine covers can't really be left removable, they either need to be ON, or OFF. I decided to add the lower covers but leave the upper ones off, so some of the beautiful kit engine can be seen. This means weathering the inside of the covers. Out with the Tamiya dark brown panel liner and some spattering
 

While we are at it, I added a dark brown wash to the radiator to enhance the lovely detail on that face
 

This was then scrubbed lightly with a cotton bud/ Q-tip dipped in enamel thinners
 

The engine covers look ok now theyre on, its a shame to cover the engine this way but thats showbiz
 

So this is where im at - ready for more weathering and final assembly, maybe tomorrow

Very nice!  I'll admit that I was skeptical seeing the wash sloshed on the decals, but it looks really nice when scrubbed away. 

 

How are the ASK turnbuckles? Comparable to the Gaspatch ones?

Time to break out the AK3G acrylics and paint some leather. I start with Saddle Brown, and painted the cockpit leather edging
 

Then thin glazes with cork brown and light brown
 

 

This then gets a coat of Tamiya dark brown panel line wash
 

While at it the MG ammo feeds get a coat of panel line wash too, to highlight the details 
 

Out with a q-tip dipped in enamel thinners
 

Which leaves you with a pleasing leather look
 

 

Next up various AK oils were gooped out onto some cardboard to start wicking away the excess linseed oil

 

Some earth shades were blobbed onto the wheels and tyres
 

then blended in with a soft stippling brush
 

This soft brush was also used to dry brush some of the oils onto the lower part of the axle wing and tail skid
 

 

 

Oils were then streaked and blended onto the lower fuselage. Streaked on the metal parts and sort of blended into the linen areas, so simulate oil seeping into the fabric 
 

 

and on the fuselage sides too

The oil paint was blended into the fuselage side and wing root area
 

 

Oil streaks were added on the axle wing too
 

Rigging line was then added to the strut attachment area
 

the axle wing was then glued on, and the rigging attached, using ASK 3D printed turnbuckles
 

The upper wing struts could then be glued on
 

then the outer struts
 

Upper wing then gets glued on. Fit is really nice here
 

Some more oil seepage and streaks added underneath
 

So this aircraft had a flare gun sticking out the fuselage side - earlier I drilled a hole and painted the patchwork done 
 

This was glued in and painted AK gun metal
 

Honestly I have no idea how this sat, or even if it stayed at all, but here it is
 

Out with the Tamiya panel line wash again for the nose area
 

 

More stains and so on around the cowling and linen area at the front
 

And a quick test fit of the prop

This build has been a quick one, the Fokker D.VII is an incredible kit, lots of similarities to the DR I just build on my Youtube channel, but clearly an improvement as an airframe. 

Not sure whats next, but ive got a week in Bali starting this Saturday so Ill be doing some plotting over a couple of cold Bintangs

Im not a WW1 builder at all and more in for WW2 warbirds

 

 

But what i can say, yaih this is really good modelling going on here, looks stunning imo, very impressive indeed.
