A small update. I had planned to print the wings on my filament printer, but...... For about 2 weeks I could not get the first layer to stick to the plate. I tried re-leveling about a dozen times, no joy. Then I finally realized that the first layer started lifting in the exact same place. So, instead of placing the print in the center of the plate I moved it  to the back end of the plate. Problem solved.

 

I had a little bit of blue filament let so I tried printing the rear cockpits and one wing section, just to see if I had truly solved the print issue. And here they are.

 

Cockpit blanks were printed to check for fit, and the outermost wing section with engine. Wings and engines will be multi part affairs. Cockpit blanks still need some modifications as I did not get the rearmost cockpit consoles correct.

Engine comes with all in one exhaust. I may remove the built in exhaust and replace.

Nice progress, Dan. However, whilst I understand why you recycled the F-108 seats, their square top shape detracts from the look of the B-58, which had clamshell-type seats, but with a rounded top : they « overfill » the cockpits, IMHO.

Yes Hubert, I agree. Too big, too bulky. Working on a solution.

A little slow lately, my printers are very temperamental. But i have some of the wings printed out.

 

Here is the forwardmost part of the port wing. Starboard printing now.

I use the filament printer for large flat structures, seems to give the best results.

Good that your could rein in your printers, Dan.

Just be careful about the under- and over-wing fairings for the main undercarriage bays: they had sharp edges and right angles to the wing surface, and their surface was « flat » (or more rightly, parallel to the wing surface), not rounded as per the design you are using …

Yes, Hubert is correct.

 

I don't have a photo of the upper fairing, but here is a pic of the lower fairing that shows nicely what Hubert said:

One has to be somewhat forgiving for these 'huge' conversions from designers with often minimal knowledge of the real thing and that were never intended to be of the accuracy oft needed in the modelling fraternity.

Allowances have to be made and much modifications figured out and applied to get finer detailing.

 

I look upon them as the 2020's version of the vacform - but on steroids! 😁🤣🤣🤣🤣

Or maybe our equivalent of AI.  There seems to be an awful lot of "that looks about right" engineering going on in some of these files.  But we see that in IM kits as well, so you pick your poison I guess.  Everyone exclaims the beauty of the Hustler but there is so little real familiarity with it out there that an awful lot of the details are wishful thinking.  I wonder if organizations like the Air Force Museum and the Naval Aviation Museum have considered scanning their airplanes and then selling the files to people like us to build from.  That would solve many of the accuracy problems and could generate some income as well.

Ok some more printed wing parts. Now that I can look at the physical wing I will need to fix the landing gear fairings on the top and bottom of the wing. The detail is just too soft, More of a gradual hump as opposed to a sharp fairing.

Also I screwed up and printed 2 port wing sections so I have an unneeded wing to practice my repair/correction on.

Haha!!! I did the very same thing with the outer wing panels of my Victor - two starboard panels even though I'd marked them prt and stb on their cut faces!  9hrs of print but only about 70grams of resin! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Actually I  need to get back to the Thunderflash. I am planning to use the Flash to dial in my metal finish skills before painting the Hustler.
