No Rainer, not planning on skinning it in aluminum sheet. I would no idea how to do that. Just planning on using spray on metallic paint.

Great undertaking, Dan ! And of my favorite jet ever ! 
 

There is a paper model in 1/32. I bought it to use it as a template for a scratchbuilt plastic one. Then I chickened out when trying to convert the ejection seats from paper to plastic … That was before 3D-printing was largely available for modellers …

I was thinking not long ago of reviving this project … Now you give me ideas …

Well, I even contemplated a 1:24 scale Hustler ...

But to build three (almost) identical ejection seats AND four J-79 afterburner cans ... But with 3D printing this seems doable.

Rainer, even in 1:32nd scale the model will be 36 inches long, can't  imagine 1:24th.

 

Ejection seats....When I built Chads F-108 he provided a very similar looking seat. I will  print them out and see how they look in the Hustler. J-79 exhaust nozzles shouldn't be that hard to get. Although I haven't looked there are probably some digital files that can be printed out.

 

Cockpits will be another matter. There are 1:48th cockpits out there but they seam to be cast resin, not easily upsized. If I could find someone with digital files they could be printed in 1:32. I can design my own cockpits but it will be quite a chore.

A little progress.

 

I have printed the 2 forwardmost sections. Here you can see a better job of opening up the pilot windows. I have also removed the pilots overhead hatch.

 

 

However I still am having some problems with the forward wing section. Can't seem to get this section to cooperate. I am not able to manipulate this section the way I have with the others. I need to cut it up into smaller chunks for printing. As it is it will not fit on either printer bed after being scaled up to 1:32nd. I also want to separate the engines from the wing, so far no luck.

Hey, Robert, the designer, replied to my request to help with the forward wing section. He sent an attachment with new/ improved wing sections. Woohoo!

 

I am now able to slice and dice this portion of the model and separate the fuselage from the wing and the wing from the engines.

 

Full speed ahead.

Things have been a little slow the last few days. Both of my printers decided to throw a tantrum, only got one of them going today.

 

So here are the latest prints. Total length is at 19 inches. There is a hole designed into the main fuselage parts. It is a great aid to get everything lined up correctly. Plastic tube and wooden dowel provide great strength.

 

 

 

And yes, a little side project can be seen in the background. An RF-84F, also from CDtrader.

I am seeing some very big quantities of resin being used - can you not hollow out the parts in your slicer?

For some reason the "shell" command doesn't work on these files. The shell command would hollow out the parts.

Instead I  have to get creative and use the "loft" and "cut" features. In the case of the middle fuselage sections I wanted to preserve the central alignment hole. So I removed some material. Didn't remove as much as I could have as I wanted the central sections as beefy as possible to support the wings.
