B-58 Hustler

After several years playing with digital files and downloading STL files from the internet I have decided to tackle the B-58. Always a favorite of mine, so why not.

 

I searched the internet for B-58 STL files and came across several. I was looking or 3d print ready, good overall shape and no panel lines.

 

Here is what I found.

 

 

 

 

This is a design that I found on CGtrader. The designer is Robert Ho, and it cost $10. I wanted a file with no panel lines. Why? Because even the finest panel line in 1/144th scale when increased by 450% will look way out of scale.

 

So this is where it start. I will be downloading the files to Fusion 360 in order to manipulate the files. I will be cutting the fuselage into manageable chunks. I will hollow out the cockpit sections and cut out the canopies. I will also be separating the wings and cutting off the engine pods.

 

All in all a challenging project that should take several months.

What a beauty. 

One of the world's most dramatically styled bombers. It looks like it's going Mach 2 stood on the tarmac. 

This and the B-One are two of my absolute favourites.

Thanks guys, been a favorite of mine since I was a kid. Lots of tweaking will be needed on the files.

 

I will need to open up all 3 cockpits and the wheel bays.

 

Lots of aftermarket for the old Monogram kit, I wonder if any of it could be upsized to 1:32?

My oh my! the absolute Holy Grail of 1/32 modeling for me! I will be glued to this WIP!! I have the Tigger vac and I was hoping to warm up to it by taking on my first vac this year, but that build unfortunately stalled. It has been far more challenging that I first thought; doable I think, but it just requires more dedication than I have to spare at the moment. 

 

I do have some resin intakes I got from somewhere that are pretty nice - maybe from someone on LSP who was going down this path? I've had them about 10 years now; AFAIK there's no real kit to mate them to other than the vac. 

 

Back to the B-58; not a week goes by that I don't think about how I might be able to design some 3D components to facilitate building it. I'm not there yet, but I'll sure be watching what you do!

So here are some photos of the first print. 

 

These are some filament prints just to get an idea of what I am in for. I have cut out the windows for now and have hollowed out the interior of the parts. Still lots of changes and improvements to come. The forward fuselage with the 3 cockpits, open hatches and forward wheel well will need the most attention.

 

My plan is to add panel lines to all parts, if I can pull it off. Some witchcraft may be needed to get them right. My plan is to print the fuselage section and all detail parts in resin. The wings may be best printed on my filament machine.

 

 

 

First 3 sections glued together are already 12 inches long. this blue filament forward fuselage will not be used on the finished model. it is more a construction aid to help me better design and modify Roberts original 1/144th scale model.

Had the Monogram model of this back in the '60's.  A fantastic looking plane at the time.
