I guess I paint Figures now....Gladiator Hulk, anyone?

The Dark knight still needs his eyes and base painted, and touch ups and sealing, but I started printing this next one.  

 

It's a REALLY nice print, but it was really cheap.  Under $5.  

 

It's so detailed it was choking my pretty new laptop in rendering mode.  

Still printing his shorts and 2 parts of the base. IT's a big boy!
 

 

I BARELY understand flesh tones, why no throw green into the mix?

I found them on Etsy.  Search gladiator hulk, its like $4 something.

It's BIG.

 

 

The parts are very thoughtfully joined where seams are covered by things like the edge of armor, his shorts, a gauntlet, etc.

 

 

 

 

Next step, a black primer, a white zenithal/volume coat, then off to the races!

Got a decent amount of time at the bench this weekend.  I primed Hulk with a black rattlecan primer, then used white ink for a zenithal/volumetric highlight.  I should have added more white in the deepest shadows, but this was my first attempt.

 

Then I used a dark red for the shadow areas, as red is opposite green on the wheel.

 

Then I used a variety of greens, including pastel and lime, to give a nice mix of highlights. 

Couldn't resist painting some detail, and I could not find a decent place to stop, so I basecoated all the leather straps.  

 

But this isn't a Daniel Day Lewis film, where is the rest of him?

 

 

Still a long way to go but I am happy with my progress.

Today at lunch I tried some drybrushing to deepen up the leather tones.  That single coat of vallejo chocolate brown and the texture really screams old leather to me, but I wanted to keep going.

 

Top leg straps have one light drybrush coat of a brown with some red in it, vallejo's saddle brown, I think. 

 

I think I prefer the drybrushed one, its on top in this photo.

Did some additional leather work, nothing amazing but I think it's looking more like leather.

He's looking very realistic, which I know is a silly thing to say about the Hulk in gladiator garb  The tones etc are giving movie (rather than comic) vibes which I'm really enjoying.

Snuck in some time and started the base, I painted white primer where the broken columns are, in prep for an off wife base coat and then some weathering.  The detail in this print is really something. 

 

 

 

And I started painting his combat shorts.

 

Here is where they are now, the peach looking leather really settles down into a nice red saddle color when I hit it with washes.

Tight week this week, short of work days because of the 250th Birthday coming up, and I have dinner plans tonight, so it may be a while.

Quick session last night.   I used a wash on the reddish contrast part of the belt, and carefully hand painted the shadows of the sandals to try to push the shadows and lows darker. I also added this wash to every cut and large wrinkle of the belt and front and back armor, and as an edge lowlight to show shadow and depth.  I might do this again with a darker color, as the base is pretty dark already and the contrast isn't as great as I'd hoped.

 

 

 

I want to see it under natural light today, for some reason the yellow lighting is washing out the contrast.

I think I have gone as far as I can with the shadows and dark, repairing the wash out from the light colored drybrushing.

 

I think I will go back with a VERY light, targeted application of light brown to deck tan, only in the deep cuts to simulate the edges of damaged leather.

 

Of course I am open to advise and suggestions regarding this, I consider this invaluable.

 

 

 

 

Particularly on these chest straps, this is right under a light fixture.   All of the "shadow" is carefully targeted wash. 

 

 

Same here, the dark areas are hand painted, I used a wash but I only applied it to the wrinkles, shadows, and cracks to preserve the highlights and prevent a never ending back and forth.

Finally started the handle for the mace.   Also changed the dark silver spikes for bright silver, which really makes them stand out.  Started the toenails and minor stuff. 

 

 

 

Next comes the face and base.

I did some base work last night.  Mostly drybrushing so far.  

 

 

I also started the face, always a huge part of any figure. 

 

Not much here, his head it really tiny, hes wearing a helmet, and his eyes are suits.

 

 

 

Time to start thinking about the next project.

Well, tonight I got a text from spectrum, our isp is down.  We just cut the cord last year, so no internet for the house means no TV or movies. 

 

A rare treat, actually.  Tonight I made progress.  I was planning to just put a dark wash on those Hollywood choppers hulk was sporting. But, even though I've never even tried to paint eyes on a figure larger than 1/35, I picked up a brush and touched up the iris areas and then the green around the eyes.   Suddenly I painted the iris a pretty dark green.   I was stunned to see that I did not hate how he looks.  I texted a couple non hobbyist critics and they also dont hate them, although they were far kinder to me than saying they didnt hate them.  

 

 

Feeling invicible, i decided to paint some bushy eyebrows at the visible inside corners, as I had at least managed to fake a prior set of individually painted hairs in the shape of a tiny eyebrow.  First try.  It seemed easy but easy to overdo.   

 

No photos, but that went SO wrong I painted over them and abandoned the idea.  

 

I tried to airbrush some pro acry bright silver to finish the head after the face is complete to my capability, but I think it was too thick and I didn't have any thinner for acrylics after google said not to use water.  This went on pretty matte and really read white to me.  

 

I grew to hate this as soon as I took off the tape.  I decided the light silver was way too white, while I think the dark silver looks like Grey paint to me.  

 

Another quick search told me I can mix the 2 without any problem, so I settled on this 

 

The main helmet color is the mix, the lighter is the light silver straight but hand brushed on.  Its still very light but much less grainy and "white" than airbrushed without thinner.  All of the pro acryl Metallics that I have tried is very forgiving of hand brushing, not always the case in my experience with several different versions of silver metallic paint. 

 

Really happy with what I got away with on the face.

 

 

 

This is just the initial base coat.  There is a ton of detail like tiny lines that look like welds around the base of the spikes, nice crisp lines and gouges and dents that will really pop under a wash. 

 

really loving the 3d printer so far, and surprisingly loving this project.   I have never enjoyed figure painting before this year, and hadnt painted any figure in the past 10 years or so.

Any and all tips, critique is welcome.
