wunwinglow Posted May 28 Posted May 28 (edited) While waiting for Wizard paint to dry, I had a wander through the FABULOUS DBMK Sea Fury kit, and as you do, decided I wanted to add a few little bits, specifically a RATO pack, some 500lb MC bombs ad the smaller 45 gallon drop tanks, because, well, you know the feeling, you just can't leave things as they are! Anyway, dug out my old references from the prehistoric PP Aeroparts detail set, never throw anything away, and a couple of hours later, had the first set of parts on the printer. 3 more iterations, happy with these, and... Just as I hit print, i see another perfect pic of the RATO pack, showing I didn't get the rear frame quite right, location and angle, so.... Bin the print, CAD the CAD, hit print again.... Brilliant! More pics when V2 is finished. Oh, and now it is pouring with rain, after a week of horrible heat, and then missing the amazing thunderstorms which passed us by, north and south simultaneously, by 5 miles! Using the Elegoo ABS-like v3 resin at the mo, which is really runny even without the heater (which is a game changer too, by the way) so the models drain off really well when done, so the wash Isopropanol stays working way, way longer than it ever did with the FormLabs printers, it takes maybe 5 minutes to unload the parts once printed, and that includes cleaning the build plate, draining the resin tray through a paint filter, quick check to see the FEP layer is all good, tray back in the printer, resin back in the tray, top up if needed, close the lid, ready to print again. I have replaced 5 FEP films so far, bit of a fiddle but just take your time, although there are replacement trays with snap fitting latches so you can change the film in a minute... Current FEP is up to 80k, so past it's recommended swap out time of 60k, but it looks fine at the mo. It would be nice to how how long it will actually last, but I don't want to drown the printer, so it will be a game of chicken to see when it gets swapped out! Anyway, I seem to be able to make bits by the hundreds, easily, and as the resin is a fraction of the price of FormLabs materials, this has definitely changed my views on how useful this bit of kit is. Once the Wizard is done, I def want to tackle something a bit bigger..... mozart 1
RCPlym Posted June 5 Posted June 5 I too am very impressed with mine in general. Very, very few fails none of which were due to the machine or materials. (see further down though!) I just got in a batch of Inslogic Pro and High Detail resins and it is producing outstandingly good prints. Very low viscosity and low odour. And, with the deal they had at £5.40 a kilo, it was rude not to take advantage of a few pallets worth! I dunno what it is, but I still can't quite get on with Elegoo resins, the ABS-Like in particular. There always seems to be something that doesn't end up exactly right. All of them do seem to be a lot more brittle than the Jayo ABS-Like and this Inslogic stuff. I can scribe both of those fine - pretty damned close to polystyrene results, but the Elegoo seem to chip along the edge of scribes and badly at the end of thin sections. I'll keep working at it, but I suspect once it is gone I'll not get any more. I have changed films four times - I went to about 85k on the first Elegoo film and a tiny pinhole did appear. Since tried another brand in another tank and that is now on just over 55k and appears to be 'as new' still. The Elegoo version showed some faint 'markings' I noticed at 40k, so I hope the 'off brand' will outlast the Elegoo with ease. I can definitely warn you that you don't want to drown the printer with a flood of resin - I bought a 4 Ultra 16K that apparently only had a duff vat tilt motor. Turns out it had a full vat of resin dambuster style flood right through the thing! The motor was dead as it had resin in its innards, but other than that and a new Fresnel that took a splat of resin, it is now alive and kicking again. Not bad for well under £200 all in! I just need to make space to set it up permanently to make it useful! With my vanilla 4 Ultra, since the firmware update release Saturday past, it has locked up three times mid-print with the UV LED stuck on which 'cures' a big thick elephants foot layer and sends the temperature sky high! That has damaged the LCD screen (a little finger print blot right on the extreme left hand side), which Elegoo initially refused to replace as it was out of their '3 months only' warranty period. This morning I am happy to say they have seen the light and agreed to forward a replacement and are investigating the freezing issue. I have asked if they can send the previous firmware so I can revert to it and see if the issue happens again or not. If you haven't updated yours, I'd hold off, although the 16K may not suffer from the issue as it is different firmware. I have heard some cautionary stories about the 'easy film change' vats as it appears they can leak and they have just release an updated silicone sealing gasket for existing tanks and put the price of new ones up. I am steering well clear of them. I have five normal ones anyway, so no real need for more! 🤣 wunwinglow 1
