Feeling another large scale plane build 😎

Time to see what all the fuss is about and try a Kotaré kit!

I got this kit last year as a price from the heavy bomber group build, so a huge thank you goes to Mr.Plamo for his generous gift!

Im adding a O-mask mask and wheel plug set.

Originally I had the idea to rivet the whole plane, but I also like the idea of building the kit "as intended". Maybe I'll buy another kit in the future and give it a go.

I'm not quite settled on the scheme yet, but I really love the version @Hoss FL made. A very vivid green and grey variant of Adolf Borchers plane.

This build log probably won't be super detailed as this kit has been covered by almost everyone on this forum- Also I for some reason cannot access the LSP website from my work PC anymore, so I have to do it in the evenings. 😅

For some fun - here was my entry for the group build. Eduard / HK 1/48 B-17 The Bloody Hundredth 1943. Talk about a huge model!

That B-17 looks great Ben!  It will be interesting to follow along with your build to see what you can do with this excellent kit.

Thank you very much Ernest!

And thank you @KUROK - I hope it will be interesting 😉

Finished up the cockpit!

Nothing too fancy just following the instructions and adding some weathering.

For extra detail I added the straps for the rudder pedals and the tube to represent the fuel pipe from the drop tank.

I'm leaving the control column and seat unglued for now and will attach them later. Should make the masking easier.

The access panel for the B variant scheme was cut / scribed out using a needle in a pin wise.

Dang..yaih...that cockpit looks fantastic indeed and like that you pay attention to details, the wear and tear, and that seat many miss is in fact that as made in pressed plywood somehting (yes in my earlier builds missed that part aswell). ....looks absolute fabulous imo, like it very much.

Thank you very much Sam, Ernest, IainM, Gazzas and Mal 😄

Must say the manual for the kit is doing the heavy lifting - it really describes everything you need to know. A small booklet with references! Very handy since I'm not usually the biggest of researcher for my builds 😅

Usually this stage of the model is not the most interesting to share. It's the stage where it looks the worst... patches, repairs etc... But in this case maybe it's useful.

The builds online make it seem like everything is perfect and may skip the boring part.. There's still work to be done with filling, sanding and removing ejector pins to get a nice fuselage.

Don't get me wrong - it's a very nice kit! Im almost ready for primer after 1 week, that's really impressive for any kit 😄

Did not add a lot of extras. Just made a mask for the cockpit using the spare canopy and added the rod in front of the oil cooler.

Great progress Ben!  I here you on fixes, sanding, forming, etc. and admit I don't usually show any of that kind of work in my builds as I never think it is worth the effort to take photos of.

Thank you Mal and Ernest!

And yes I agree - often not that interesting, but maybe in this case since the kit is so hyped up.

Back to the build! I got it primed!

But had to start a new bottle of Mr Surfacer 1500 halfway through.. Don't know why, but my thinning always goes wrong with a new bottle. So got a bit of a uneven surface in places. Decided to polish it back with fine sandpaper and reapply... Finishing off with a layer of pure Mr Leveling thinner! Ohhh shiny!

Absolutely overkill for this kind of plane, but I was in a experimental mood 😂

This high gloss finish was actually not a great idea because it became a magnet for dust... Not great since I had no time for painting until a few days later.

Decided not to go with my usual pre shading. Its going to be too much work to fix in between colors.

Making a base for chipping later.

IMG-8650.jpg

Base colors going down - AK Realcolor RLM75 for fuselage. RLM74 for the darker areas - tail and engine cowling.

Rest of the pictures are quick snaps between colors while I airbrush. Excuse the quality.

Green RLM 82 from AK RC. I also started some post shading on the other side - adding some white to the original mix.

Better look at the attempt to break up the color.

Repeat the steps for the RLM82 and 74.

Go back and blend the effect with the original color to reduce the effect.

I know the higher contrast is not everyone's taste, but the effect will get toned down by later weathering. I'm also missing the shadows - I will add them after I paint the underside tonight.

Also my bench looks like a bomb went off after a long painting session 😂
