Alright - time for a new build. Been a minute or two since tacking a Kotare build, so thought id crack on with their new PR Spit.

Ordered another, the first one I got is a keeper, not a builder ;)

Looking forward to the challenge of making the one colour camo scheme look realistic in scale.

Kicking off with the cockpit - many of the parts are carried over from the Mk.Ia, but theres a lot of new stuff or stuff that needs slight modification - this is all called out very clearly in the kit instructions.

Starting with the instrument panel, some detail needs removing from the top centre section, and a dial needs drilling out, to make room for one of the camera control boxes:

Control column is made up of 3 parts as per the earlier Spitfire releases. I just dry fit it for now to the floor so everything is glued in the right place (on the control column)

The seat is a work of art, made up of 3 pieces. I really like the molded on belts, they paint up perfectly well. I drilled out the flare rack on the front edge of the seat

Holes were drilled in the bulkhead framing where applicable:

The wireless box needs to be removed from Frame 13, I just carefully removed it with a razor saw

And drilled out the holes in the mounting frame. The rest of the holes in Frame 13 could be drilled out, but I think as they're mostly not visible I'll just get them with a wash and be done with it.

The cockpit sidewalls are loaded with detail, these will pop with careful detail painting

Kotare have developed a number of clever jigs with this kit to locate the PR specific parts, the first of which is the camera control box on the starboard cockpit wall.

Holes get drilled all the way thru the fuselage side, these were taped over on the real thing. Decals are supplied to tape over the holes in the kit.

And with that, the cockpit parts are basically ready for paint. Kotare have done an amazing job with their Spitfire cockpits, so much detail and so few parts, it's a quick build.

Excellent start Sam! I’m just a bit further in my build, was just about to start my WIP here as well. Note that the seat, its support frame, the control column and its linkage arm are interior grey-green, with the rest painted Supermarine interior green. You probably saw this as well, but just in case!

Nice work so far, Tom.  I'll be interested to see your take on the RAF cockpit green and I promise not to question your parentage when I see the results.

Cheers,

Michael

I’m flattered Michael! This is Sam’s build, I just happened to post today as well.

Cheers,  Tom

I can only imagine how that went! I really like the idea of using two different greens - the added tonal interest, regardless of which exact color is used is the key. I will go the route when I eventually build my next Spitfire. Looking forward to the rest of the build!

Not one of them knows the 'correct' colour, as they weren't there on the day! 😂😂😂😂

However the recent Lockheed 12 Electra restoration ( as flown by Sidney Cotton just prior to the outbreak of WW2) matched actual extant camotint paint on the aircraft and so can be assumed to be an accurate finish.

i have seen and been onboard this aircraft last year. It looked the same as Tamiya Sky. I intend to paint my Kotare PR A in this colour as the instruction book recommends.
