I've made a start on the new Revell Meteor. I've got ups and downs with it so far. The detail is outstanding but some of the molding has required a bit of attention. I've got sink marks in some awkward spots and my ejection seat came broken.

I was struggling to figure out how I was going to paint a black on black cockpit, so decided to fully complete a sidewall to set my process up for the rest of the pit.

That's almost entirely kit, there's just two ANYZ style switches added in one area where I felt it was lacking a bit.

I'll update with some other photos shortly.

Crikey. That looks good. You've done a splendid job of picking out those details.

Thank you for being the trail blazer on this kit  I've been looking forward to seeing how it builds up.

Eager to see more.

Somewhat awkward sink mark in the cockpit. This occurred on both side but the s'board side was the worst.

The two fuselage halves have a heavy seam to fill and a mold line to remove.

Underside of the tail has very heavy sink marks.

Broken ejection seat - This isn't short shot, so I assume mine got damaged at the factory as there was nothing in the bags.

More sink marks.

Revell give you a compartment to add nose weight under the cockpit which is appreciated. Filled to the brim with liquid gravity gives the required 50 (ish) grams.

I repaired the sink marks with some punch work and made a new dial and bezel to just glue over the top. I've also drilled some holes for some more switches to give a little bit more pop.

You can see how nice the detail is of the cockpit is, miles improved on the HKM offering.

Very much appreciate the insight.

It's good to know what to expect.

I guess you're building this jet with no pilot and the cockpit open?

All of the lovely extra detail should be evident with the way your painting is picking it all out.

Well done Simon, seems like you got a bit of a mongrel of a kit there though.  After all the excitement when the kit was released earlier this month, it's good to see one actually being built on the forum. :clap2:

Yeah, that's the plan. I'm planning on making my own belts for it as I don't really like PE. I'm semi-tempted to get some Marston matting and an accumulator just to give it a bit of a base (we'll see!)

Kind of but everything so far I've managed to get past without too much pain! I want to get the pit completed and then I'll start the wings.

Great start, really like the way you did your "black" cockpit. Going to be following this one closely!

Nigels Modeling Bench noted some sink marks on the ailerons - how do yours look?

Mine cleared customs in JFK yesterday, so I hope it makes its way south fairly quick!

Oh boy, I haven't got that far. I'll dig them out shortly and have a look.

I have just had a quick look at the areas you found sinks and can confirm mine is exactly the same.

That does indicate a very well operating press as it is reproducing the issue reliably, so the problem is with the injection profile.

Without seeing the tools, I am definitely leaning towards ever so slight underpacking pressure and insufficient cooling to 'close' the gate - another quarter to half a gram on the larger frames where the parts live (the smaller frames don't suffer from sinks) and five to ten sec additional cooling would do the trick and not introduce flash.

Revell give you two options (three in the limited edition) for the instrument panel, 1 big decal or individual dial decals. Eduard also have their pre-print photo etch in the limited edition but I hate pre-painted stuff like that, so it's stayed in the box.

I'm very impressed with them. They've settled beautifully, fit their positions very well and there's a lot of detail in them. I've added two Anyz nuts to the top of the panel and I've drilled a couple of other switches out ready to receive them.

I do think the big knobs either side of the compass could have done with a bit more detail but it's not the end of the world. I may add some levers to the left side of the panel and maybe some other ANYZ switches in a couple of locations just to give it some pop.

I've also started using this flat coat and its possibly the best I've used. Waterbased, no smell, no mixing, easy clean up and dead flat for very little effort.

Very clean work.

That VMS varnish looks like something I've been searching for for years. Thanks for the tip.
