Sam_D Posted November 30, 2025 Posted November 30, 2025 (edited) Made you look! Ok my next large scale build will be Airfix's new Bf 109G-6. Won't be building it as one of the (very nice) marking options that come in the kit, although the US or Brit captured livery does appeal! I didn't get a freebie from Airfix (dont they know who I am?) so can't complete with the Brit YouTubers moaning about it on there, but when it does arrive here in Aus I'll build it as a simultaneous build here and on YT hopefully. As I proceed I'll reveal my plans for it. Progress so far: Sam Edited January 24 by Sam_D GMK, AngryJazz_Models, LSP_Kevin and 7 others 7 3
Biggles87 Posted November 30, 2025 Posted November 30, 2025 What, you actually bought one! Good for you. Not my scale, too big, but I’m interested to see what all the fuss is about. John Anthony in NZ 1
Duncan Doenitz Posted November 30, 2025 Posted November 30, 2025 I fancy building one in a North Africa scheme.
Sam_D Posted December 2, 2025 Author Posted December 2, 2025 Well Well Well Thanks, Royal Mail and Aus Post. Super quick delivery time from Jadlam in the UK. The 109 arrived about 20 mins after I uploaded this, so its excellent timing: A quick check of the contents, and nothings warped, everything is straight as an arrow. Will be starting immediately! Biggles87 Posted December 2, 2025 Posted December 2, 2025 Wow! That’s quicker than UK to France. Glad it’s all OK. John Sam_D and Paulpk 1 1
Kais Posted December 2, 2025 Posted December 2, 2025 1 week from Blighty to Oz. You must be charmed, I'm sure!! Sam_D 1
Dpgsbody55 Posted December 3, 2025 Posted December 3, 2025 Mine arrived in a week too. This is surprising as it normally takes two to three to get to me here in Perth. The normal route seems to be be England to Sydney heading east, bypassing Perth which is on the way, then truck or train back heading back west about 5,000km's... That's efficiency for you . Cheers, Michael Biggles87 1
Sam_D Posted December 4, 2025 Author Posted December 4, 2025 (edited) Couldn’t resist starting the kit almost immediately. Thought I’d start by just taping the fuselage halves together, the fit is pretty great Also glued much of the engine components that came in halves together, so that I can address the seams before assembly I’ll also be uploading progress videos on my YT channel as I go https://youtube.com/@sdscalemodels?si=DMSfUnSsoRkUTvVp Cheers Sam Edited December 4, 2025 by Sam_D due to image bullshittery FW190A-5, LSP_K2, geedubelyer and 14 others 16 1
Sam_D Posted December 6, 2025 Author Posted December 6, 2025 Sort of jumping around a little with the build sequence, building up as much of the engine as possible so I can paint as much as possible at once. Ive decided to build this (mostly) out of box, I will need to make one or to modifications, but nothing massive. Oh and I'll need to make masks for my markings. I jumped ahead to get the firewall built up, really just to help as an alignment tool for the engine bearers and piping/hoses that lead from the engine through the firewall. Some really nice detail, if one was so inclined they could remove all the wiring and add their own. The DB601 builds up beautifully, I just used some Mr Surfacer around the plate at the top to ensure no gaps All the dangly bits for the motor assembly I have prepped and set aside, these can all be painted up and attached to the motor after paint and before weathering. I assembled the exhaust shroud components and test fit to see if you could wrangle the exhaust stubs in after - you can. This will help with painting both the stubs and the exhaust mounts/shrouds Here's almost all the motor bits attached and held in place with the collective good will of everyone in the room. No glue as yet, the second after I took this pic it all fell apart I think I'll push on with the cockpit construction next, so I can capture that on film, then paint and weather the engine, firewall and cockpit, film it and wrap that into my first YT instalment on this project. This is my first Airfix kit ever (I think) and im super impressed! Sam Sasha As, FLMattModelling, Mal_Belford and 16 others 19
GMK Posted December 6, 2025 Posted December 6, 2025 Very rapid progress, Sam. Looking forward to paint & the YouTube video posts. Sam_D 1
Mal_Belford Posted December 7, 2025 Posted December 7, 2025 That new Airfix modelkit looks fantastic imo from your pictures. Looking forward to seeing more of this build. Sam_D 1
Sam_D Posted December 13, 2025 Author Posted December 13, 2025 Apologies, ive been pretty slack at posting progress on the 109 build. SO, where'd I leave off? Engine all built up, so time to move on to the cockpit. I think Airfix have delivered something pretty special here - and I also think the aftermarket folks will have an absolute field day with aftermarket for it. The main gear bays are also lovely. Loads of detail, I deviated from the instruction sequence and assembled the spar and bay as a removable item, so I could paint and weather it before finally gluing to the wings: RLM02 from MRP RLM-66 also from MRP for the cockpit. The aircraft im depicting has a very light bluish RLM66, so I needed to fade this out somewhat Careful detail painting , then decals applied. Detail painting done with AK3G acrylics and weathering Tamiya panel line wash Dark Grey, then with acrylic washes, then chipping with Tamiya enamel flat aluminium. Seatbelts will go in later. IP is all kit decals, which are great. I managed to get some off centre (of course!). Will add some gloss to them later on, before attaching the canopy. This thing is HUGE! Couldn't resist a quick test fit of the wings. The fit between the fuselage and wings is incredible More test fitting, this time the gun cover cowling sections and firewall. The firewall will be weathered along with the motor, before finally attachment to the fuselage. The central wing panel under the fuselage fits absolutely perfectly. Will need virtually no filler I think And finally a test fit of the engine, engine spars and most importantly, the exhaust stub mounts, which are also integral to the inner forward wing root panel. Obviously everything is dry fit here, but the fit of everything is very impressive. Again I think no filler will be needed. So everything's parked now for a few days - ive a job interview on Monday to prep for so need to focus on that. This will also give lots of time for the glue to dry so I can start cleaning up seams. Everything thus far has been filmed, and will be up on my YT channel some time next week. Cheers Sam vvwse4, FLMattModelling, GMK and 22 others 25
geedubelyer Posted December 13, 2025 Posted December 13, 2025 Brilliant stuff Sam. You're making a good fist of this. I look forward to seeing the video
