We know the DBMK Sea Fury will be accurate, but out of curiosity, does anyone know how accurate the Hobby Craft Sea Fury is?

 

(Not taking into account it's bizzare assembly IIRC)

 

If there will be a T.20 conversion......I have an Idea........

Wasn't there discussion about the wings being molded with the airfoil on the lower surfaces? And just in front of the windscreen is a facet which isn't there on the actual aircraft, but it can be sanded out. I binned mine once I placed the preorder for the DBMK kit. 

 

I'm sure others know much more

Yeah, the wing aerofoil is infamously upside-down on that one. That said, I have no idea how noticeable it would be on the finished model, and it might make for a fun project all the same.

 

I'm told that the DBMK instructions are only a week or so away now, so I'm trying to clear the bench in preparation for diving back into this one.

Actually most of the airfoil issue in the Hobbycraft kit can be easily hidden/solved. You just just have to fold the wings! I got the Fisher wing inserts from an helpful modeller who built the kit with the deployed wings. I quickly concluded it would not be that difficult to modify the plastic kit parts as the plastic is very souple. However, this is just one issue along the multiple ones you can find with that kit...

I'm pleased to report that I now have a draft set of instructions in my hot little hands, and my camera is back from repair too! That means I'll be starting the build in earnest shortly, and will have a proper update soon.

Exciting times ahead

OK, finally some actual modelling in this thread! As the old cliché goes, construction starts in the cockpit...and in the case, the first item in the instructions is the instrument panel. The kit asks you to choose between adding some very nice decals to the equally nice plastic instrument panel, or removing all that detail and replacing it with some pre-coloured photo-etch.

 

 

I chose the latter option, however, main because it seemed like a waste not to. But I'm not generally a fan of pre-coloured PE, and it's a shame the kit doesn't offer an alternative blank bulkhead to mount the PE onto, so that you can still go the decal route if you want to. In any case, all that great detail had to come off:

 

 

I then painted it with some Mr. Finishing Surfacer 1500 Black, and set about applying the four photo-etch panels (left, right, middle and top):

 

 

My placement wasn't as precise as I would like, unfortunately, but it will look fine in situ. It just needs a flat coat and some fake glass - I'll probably use some clear UV resin for this job. If I were to build another one, however, I'd go with the decals.

 

I also started work on the gun sight, which is comprised of three plastic parts, three photo-etched parts, and a piece of acetate sheet for the glass:

 

 

The cockpit's structural elements consist of five main parts, so I started with the floor and rear bulkhead:

 

 

Even in this photo there are eight plastic parts! The seat was next, itself comprised of six parts, with the PE belts still to come:

 

 

And lastly for today, the two cockpit sidewalls:

 

 

 

I got excited and painted them black before realising that there was still a bunch of parts to add, but it gives you an idea of how much detail there is. And there's quite a bit of photo-etch to add yet. It's a shame it's all going to be black, but I'll be taking steps to bring out the detail as best I can.

Thanks for the heads-up up on the IP choice. Decals it is then. 

Will you pose the finished model with the canopy slid back? I think that's possibly the only way the majority of the detail will be visible?

Not sure about the canopy yet - will probably depend on how well it fits in the closed position, and how happy I end up being with my work in the cockpit. It might not be worth showing off!

I'm confident you'll bring the cockpit to life Kev. 

On this pre-production version the printed IP decals appear to show subtle longitudinal lines in the black. 

Are they visible to the mk1 eyeball? 

 

Of course you have another decision later in the build Kev, wings folded or extended?
