Hi everybody!

I've been a fan of this site for years, but I've only recently joined. I thought I would get started by posting a work in progress! I got my copy of the Kōtare Bf 109K-4 a couple of weeks ago and got started on it right away, so I'm well into the build already.

I started with the cockpit, of course. I airbrushed it with Mr Hobby Aqueous (my favorite paints) H416 RLM 66. I next added some black for shadows and then white for highlights. Detail painting was hand brushed with Vallejo acrylics before I gave it a gloss coat. I then added the decals and sprayed another gloss coat to seal them in before giving it a wash with a mix of raw umber and Payne's gray artist's oils. Everything then got a coat of Tamiya XF-86 flat clear, after which I did a little bit of weathering with 502 Abteilung oils.

Although I really liked Kōtare's approach to the seat belts, I decided to use an HGW set for added realism.

I'm really impressed with the detail of the cockpit. I think it's one of the best I've ever seen out of the box!

K4 Test 3

I was disappointed that Kōtare decided not to add rivets to this one. I therefore added them myself using my trusty "Rosie the Riveter" tool that I've had for over 20 years now. Sorry they don't really show up all that well in the photo!

Fuselage halves have been joined. I'm always upset by how much of the cockpit detail is hidden once it's all together!

I painted the wheel wells and radiator flaps in much the same way as the cockpit, except with H70 RLM 02 as the base.

And that's where she stands now. So far, I'm loving this kit! The fit is excellent and the detail is incredible, and I love that it's not over-engineered like some kits in this scale.

Please let me know if you have any questions, comments, or especially critiques.

That’s a truly impressive debut Justin! I really like how you made the details in the cockpit really stand out. Count me in for following along.

Welcome aboard Justin :hi:

Your paintwork is remarkable.

The definition resulting from the techniques you describe is incredible.

Excellent start to this project.

Thanks for sharing your progress with us.

I'm eager to see the next steps.

Cheers,

Welcome! Really nice work and pictures!

May I ask where you could find the rivet plans? I was lucky enough to win a Kotare kit, so I want to try something similar in the future (still far away)😊

Can we admit that those we find here are correct?

Hi Ben - I got the rivet plans from the 109 Lair, at the link rafju provided. They're under "Drawings" in the menu at the left. It is indeed a great resource!
