Total stash across all scales is under 100 kits, and I'd certainly like to trim it down a bit. Too bad there's so many amazing kits coming out.

I started buying kits in the 1990s thinking that the hobby was fading away. I have always and only been interested in large scale WW2 subjects and thought that I could keep the stash reasonable by strictly keeping to that single category. Who knew that virtually every WW2 aircraft would in time be kitted in 1/32-1/24!

 The problem really got out of hand when I began going to the shows. "Hey look, a Tamiya Corsair for $70!" And over there

a Revell Ju88 for $40!!! 

 And don't even get me started on AM.

I am not going to say how many are in the stash but at my current build pace (3 per year) I will need to live to 120 or so to get through them.

 And the Kotare 109K-4 arrived last Wednesday.  Thanks for listening, John

I guess mine is pretty tame compared to some.  I only (😂) have one closet full plus a dozen or so in a coat closet.  About 65-70.  My problem is that I decided to get back into the hobby around 2019-20 then spent 5 years buying kits before I actually started building.  And I can't seem to stop buying even now that I am building.  It's a personal problem.

Wealthy, I wish, I started building in 1/32 scale way back in the eighties when 1/32 scale kits were a rarity, so I bought whatever I saw as long as it was 1/32 scale.

I did have a good job and modelling was and is my main hobby so within reason money was not a problem.

In the nineties I started to plan for retirement and bought kits, books, paint, AM ready for a lesser standard of living that retirement would bring.

However my modelling tastes have got narrower, the initial idea was single engined aircraft in 1/32, multi engined in 1/48 but lately the 1/48 scale has gone by the wayside.

But I still mangle plastic on a daily basis and still enjoy it.

Like a few others, my stash is too large (in all aspects!) to live in one place,  so it is dispersed around the house/garage, wherever a bit of space can be found.

 

Here’s a couple of the repositories..

 

 

As it stands, I have about 70 kits ‘in stock’. (67 LSPs, 3 1:24 cars.)

 

I keep a detailed spreadsheet with everything logged - including all paint and AM.

 

My immediate goal is to have more completed models than stashed items - and I’m currently one ahead! 71 built, 70 stashed. So a further purchase will knock me off that achievement!

 

Last year I managed to finish seven models, but only one this year.. for various reasons..

Subsitute "kits" for books, "build" for "read", etc, and it's just as applicable to our hobby.  

 

It's interesting to  see what other people have amassed.   I thought I had acquired an excessive stock with a current stash of 45 kits, which are split almost evenly between 1:32 and 1:48, with a small smattering of 1:72 in the mix.  In my defence, the 1:48 are mostly of the larger variety - eg two each of HKM Lancs and Forts - and the 1:72 include a pair of Airfix V-bombers and a pair of Stirlings, so mostly large.  I just don't have space for a 1:32 Lancaster etc, much as I would love to build one. 

 

And I'm happy with that, I'm not inclined to add any more kits.  Apart from the forthcoming Revell Hunter and Meteor, that is.  Oh, and the ICM Hs 123.  Hang on, perhaps one of the later Spitfire PRs when Kotare get around to that, and almost certainly more than one Eduard P-51B/C.  And then ... 

 

They're tucked away in cupboards mostly, so sorry, no photos, but have fun using your imagination.

Also a weakness of mine I have 5 bookcases  (non modelling) and boxes of books in the loft.

Also my modelling books in both my study and the loft.

I'm right at 200 kits. These are 1/32, a few 1/35, Aurora monsters and what I call "odd kits", a few sailing ships (1/96) and 1/350 ships. These collected over my lifetime; (a pre-barcode 1/25 Tiger I, for example) so, no, I'm cash poor, stash rich. All of my kits fit on two shelf units, and my modelling library on a 5x7 bookcase.

I can't get to the stash at the moment as we're renovating the basement and it's blocked in by all the other stuff down there. It's definitely grown a bit in the last while which is a bit of a problem.

I like these topics, mainly because they make me feel good. Like hee I am not the only one..........

 

Ok my stash is basicly devided in two parts. 

 

First part:

 

The kits that I really really want to build. I collected the US Navy WW2 kits, even the Tigercat but I doubt wether I will be good enough to build that one, a lot of fighters and the bomberkits of the heavy's which are out there. 

 

I do not play the guitar, make noise is the best way to descibe that.

 

Part two,

The kits I have since I don't know when and this part probably will never get build. Although the USS Iowa............

 

Offcourse there will be kits to buy in the future so I will never finish my stash, unless they find a way to make me 175 years old, good health and with a proper filled wallet.

 

About the bookpart.....

My pride, I hope to fill this one sometimes. My girlfriend says I am nuts, it will all end up as old paper when I buy the farm but we will see about that.

 

So sane or insane, that is the question......

Is 'stash' an unfortunate term?

 

Does it not imply ill-gotten-gains, underhand dealings, hidden assets, secrecy -  perhaps shameful acquisitions?

 

An outcome of a brief, highly focused, international exchange of views earlier today prompts me to describe my unmade model kits and AM as my collection, or more completely, my clothes closet collection aka ccc. 

 

Feels better already.
